Course history
  • Introduction

    The language is normally English. For Norwegian students, the topic of health management is taught in Norwegian.;

    This common course is developed for all the bachelor’s degree programmes taught at the Faculty of Health Sciences that are covered by the National Curriculum Regulations for Norwegian Health and Welfare Education (RETHOS).;;

    The course deals with public health and health management. Public health emphasises the distribution of health challenges in the population based on causal connections and risk factors relating to health, education, work and living conditions, international guidelines and conditions with a bearing on illness, health and quality of life in the population at individual, group and society level, including the sustainability goals.;;Health management emphasis a fundamental understanding of how the health service is organised, relevant legislation, strategies and goals for preventive and health promoting work in Norway.;;For international students, the focus will be on the Nordic welfare model.;

    The student must have been admitted to the study programme.

  • Learning outcomes

    After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge and skills:

    Knowledge

    The student;

    • can describe and explain factors that affect disease, health and quality of life in groups or the population as a whole
    • can describe the epidemiological and demographical foundation for public health work
    • can describe social inequality in relation to health, and is familiar with the national and global consequences of inequality
    • can describe the purpose, organisation and coordination of health and social care services
    • is familiar with relevant laws and regulations relating to the health and social care services
    • can describe the relationship between work, education, social participation, inclusion and the experience of health
    • can describe the goals for sustainable development and their significance for public health

    Skills

    The student can

    • reflect on ethical challenges related to public health work that aims to change behaviours
    • find, assess and refer to health promoting and preventive strategies, organisation and measures in light of the goals for sustainable development
    • reflect on how and why the status of Sami as indigenous peoples affects the development of the health and social care services
  • Teaching and learning methods

    The teaching and learning methods include digital textbooks and digital supervised seminars. The course is organized as flipped classroom. Digital textbooks will be made available to students in advance.

  • Course requirements

    In this course, students will learn about the key theories, concepts and values of nursing, and what defines nursing as an independent profession. Human beings’ fundamental needs and resources, and what promotes, impedes and maintains balance in people's fundamental needs are central aspects of the course. This forms the basis for the nurse’s duties both in the municipal and specialist health service. Furthermore, ethical perspectives and assessment, action and decision-making processes in nursing will be studied, as well as the relational responsibility of the nurse.

    After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

    The student

    • is capable of describing the historical development and social mandate of nursing and the discipline’s development from work to profession
    • has fundamental knowledge of theories and key nursing concepts
    • is capable of describing the human being’s fundamental needs and resources
    • is capable of describing factors that can influence a patient's ability to self care
    • is capable of describing the human being’s psychological development and needs
    • is capable of describing what makes up assessment, action and decision-making processes in nursing
    • is capable of describing the main elements of care ethics and why attitudes and values have a central place in nursing
    • is capable of describing and giving grounds what characterizes an ethically difficult situation
    • is capable of describing key values such as self-determination, respect, dignity and solidarity
    • is capable of describing how cultural conditions and social inequality may be significant to health matters
    • is capable of explaining the relevance of the duty of confidentiality and duty to document for nursing practice
    • is capable of describing characteristics of empathetic communication and cooperation and how this is applied to nursing practice

    Skills

    The student

    • is capable of reflecting on ethical difficulty situations by applying the SME model (Centre for medical ethics, UiO)
    • has basic communication skills such as actively listening, giving and receiving constructive feedback and expressing disagreement in an appropriate manner
    • is capable of receiving supervision and reflecting on his/her own role and participation in group cooperation
    • masters the principles of academic writing
    • conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation with the help of a defibrillator

    Competence

    The student is capable of

    • exchanging views on the fundamentals of nursing and the nurse’s areas of responsibility
    • reflecting on the significance of own efforts in study groups and reflecting on challenges when group processes are used as learning methods
  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

    Self-study, lectures, digital learning resources, group work, seminars with presentations and practical training: simulation and skills training (two weeks) and Inspirational practical training (one week).

    The flipped classroom is used as a teaching method for part of the course. Digital learning resources will be made available in advance.

  • Grading scale

    The following must have been completed and approved in order for a student to take the exam:

    • individual assignment, scope of 1,000 words (+/- 10%)
    • participation in seminar in communication
    • participation in seminars, compulsory attendance of 80%
    • inspirational practical training, one week, compulsory attendance of 90 % of practical training. Focusing on the nurse’s role and responsibilities. Supervised by third year students
    • participation om SF-unit, two weeks, compulsory attendance of 90 %
  • Examiners

    Home exam in groups

    • Carried out in groups of 3-5 students.
    • Three days
    • Scope: 2,500 words (+/- 10 %).
    • Individual description of own contribution to the group is attached to the assignment, 350 words (+/- 10%)
  • Overlapping courses

    Pass/fail.
