Introduction
This course teaches students about patients and next-of-kin in an acute, critical and chronic context, and what the nurse’s areas of responsibility entail. Students will learn to communicate and cooperate with patients and next-of-kin in situations of stress and crisis. They will also become familiar with key phenomena in nursing, such as hope, insecurity, fear, fatigue, pain and nausea. Systematic observation and assessment, nursing of somatic diseases, pre and postoperative nursing and competent drug administration are also part of the course.

- SYKK/SYKP1100 Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, 12 credits
- SYKK/SYKP1200 Microbiology and Infection Control, 5 credits
- SYKK/SYKPPRA10 Fundamentals of Nursing/Fundamentals of Nursing 2, 15 credits
or equivalent.

Knowledge
The student
- is capable of describing the historical development and social mandate of nursing and the discipline’s development from work to profession
- has fundamental knowledge of theories and key nursing concepts
- is capable of describing the human being’s fundamental needs and resources
- is capable of describing factors that can influence a patient's ability to self care
- is capable of describing the human being’s psychological development and needs
- is capable of describing steps in evidence-based practice (EBP) abd explain the contents and what makes up assessment, action and decision-making processes in nursing
- is capable of describing the main elements of care ethics and why attitudes and values have a central place in nursing
- is capable of describing and giving grounds what characterizes an ethically difficult situation
- is capable of describing key values such as self-determination, respect, dignity and solidarity
- is capable of describing how cultural conditions and social inequality may be significant to health matters
- is capable of explaining the relevance of the duty of confidentiality and duty to document for nursing practice
- is capable of describing characteristics of empathetic communication and cooperation and how this is applied to nursing practice
Skills
The student
- is capable of reflecting on ethical difficulty situations by applying the SME model (Centre for medical ethics, UiO)
- has basic communication skills such as actively listening, giving and receiving constructive feedback and expressing disagreement in an appropriate manner
- is capable of receiving supervision and reflecting on his/her own role and participation in group cooperation
- masters the principles of academic writing
- conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation with the help of a defibrillator
Competence
The student is capable of
- exchanging views on the fundamentals of nursing and the nurse’s areas of responsibility
- reflecting on the significance of own efforts in study groups and reflecting on challenges when group processes are used as learning methods
Teaching and learning methods
Self-study, lectures, digital learning resources, group work, seminars with presentations and practical training: simulation and skills training (two;weeks) and Inspirational practical training (one week).
The flipped classroom is used as a teaching method for part of the course. Digital learning resources will be made available in advance.
Course requirements
The following must have been completed and approved in order for a student to take the exam:
- individual assignment, scope of 1,500 words (+/- 10%)
- participation in seminar in communication;
- participation in seminars, compulsory attendance of 80%;
- inspirational practical training, one week,;;compulsory attendance of 90 % of practical training. Focusing on the nurse’s role and responsibilities. Supervised by third year students
- participation om SF-unit, two weeks, compulsory attendance of 90 %
Assessment
Part 1 Assessment of practical training
Practical training has requirements for attendance 90 %. The student fills in a self-presentation for the start of the practice and self-assessment for the mid- and final assessment. Other compulsory activities are:
- courses in first aid
- courses in blood test

Part 2 Supervised individual written exam
The following must have been approved in order for the student to take part 2 of the exam:
- Participation in the SF-unit and seminars, 4 weeks. Compulsory attendance of 90 %.
Permitted exam materials and equipment
All aids are permitted, as long as the rules for source referencing are complied with.

Pass/fail.
