Introduction
In this course, the students will acquire knowledge of the most common diseases in medicine and surgery among children and adults. Knowledge of pathology and treatment are a precondition for the nurse’s assessment, action and decision processes. This is a preparatory course leading up to SYKK/SYKPPRA20 Nursing Patients with Acute, Critical and Chronic Diseases 1, taken in the second year.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:
Knowledge
The student is capable of
- describing the most common diseases that might require medical or surgical treatment, with a focus on symptoms and signs, phases of illness and treatment
- stating the grounds for causes, prevention, symptoms and signs, assessment, treatment, prognosis and complications in the most common diseases among children
- describing the most common tests and examinations used to diagnose disease
- describing different groups of drugs for the most common internal medicine diseases and conditions requiring surgery, with emphasis on effects, possible side effects and interactions
Competence
The student is capable of
- reflecting on how knowledge of the most common diseases and causes of health deficits are key to the practice of nursing

Teaching and learning methods
Self-study, lecturers, workshop, digital learning activities.
The flipped classroom is used as a teaching method for part of the course.

Course requirements
The following must have been completed and approved in order for a student to take the exam:
- participation in worshop, compulsory attendance of 80 %
- multiple choice assignment, 60% of the answers must be correct.

Examiners
The course SYKK/SYKPPRA21 and SYKK/SYKPPRA30 complement each other. In this course, the students will practice independence in planning, carrying out and assessing nursing in acute and chronically ill patients. The prevention of complications and early detection of deterioration in the patients’ condition are key elements. Quality development, patient safety and ethics and health gudiance are also part of the course. You will complete 8 weeks of practical training in this course.
