Introduction
This course introduces students to basic drug administration and drug calculation. They will learn about the connection between drug administration and patient safety and about the accuracy requirements that apply to working with drugs. The theme will be continued in the second and third years of study.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills, and general competence:
Knowledge
The student
- can describe an account of key terms in drug handling
- can describe the procedure for handling drugs from the drug is prescribed until taken it or it has been disposed of
- describe generic drug substitution and applying the Norwegian Medicines Agency's substitution list or local substitution list
- referring to relevant legislation and regulations for the use of drugs, including regulation for documentation, handling of non-conformities and disposal
Skills
The student
- can carry out independent and faultless calculations of drug dosages, quantities and strengths using different methods of administration
- can assess and checking their own and other people’s calculations
- can usiereference works such as Felleskatalogen and Legemiddelhåndboka
General competence
The student
- has knowledge of and understanding of the connection between proper drug handling and patient safety
Teaching and learning methods
Self-study, lectures, work on assignments in groups at workshop. Digital learning activities. Simulation in drug calculations and drug administration at the SF-unit.
Course requirements
The following must have been completed and approved in order for a student to take the exam:
- Simulation in drug administrations.
- Multiple choice assignment, qualifying arithmetic problems (100 % correct).
Assessment
Supervised individual written exam.
- 3 hours
- To pass the exam, the student must submit a faultless answer paper.
Permitted exam materials and equipment
Calculator handed out by the university.
Grading scale
Pass-fail.
Examiners
All answers are assessed by one examiner.
External peer groups from multiple institutions are used in the design of assignment sets and evaluation criteria.
