Introduction
This course introduces the students to the life of microorganisms, their virulence and how infection is transferred. Du skal studere smittekjeden og hvordan tiltak kan iverksettes for å bryte hvert ledd av kjeden for å forhindre smitte. Hygiene in relation to the environment surrounding the patients will also be studied, and also how basic infection control procedures can prevent contagion and infections. Students will familiarise themselves with relevant laws and regulations related to the duty to report and the use of force. The course also covers antibiotic resistance, infection prevention and patient safety.

Learning outcomes
In this course, the students will acquire knowledge of the most common diseases in medicine and surgery among children and adults. Knowledge of pathology and treatment are a precondition for the nurse’s assessment, action and decision processes. This is a preparatory course leading up to SYKK/SYKPPRA20 Nursing Patients with Acute, Critical and Chronic Diseases taken in the second year.

Course requirements
The following must have been completed and approved in order for a student to take the exam:
- oral presentation - each study group draws an issue in microbiology to be presented at a seminar
- group assignment - students will plan and describe how infection control procedures can be carried out in practice. Scope of 1,500 words (+/- 10%). Groups of 3-5 students.
Assessment
The following must have been completed and approved in order for a student to take the exam:
- participation in worshop, compulsory attendance of 80 %
- multiple choice assignment, 60% of the answers must be correct.;

Grading scale
None.
Examiners
Two examiners will assess the exams. At least 10% of the exam papers will be assessed by an external examiner. The external examiner’s assessment shall benefit all students.

SYKK1400 and SYKP1400 overlap 100 %.
