Course history

Introduction

This joint course is developed for all the Bachelor programmes at the Faculty of Health Sciences which are part of RETHOS (National guidelines for the Health and Social Studies), and is considered as an introductory course, preferably taken during the first part of the study programme.

In this course, starting with relatable examples, students will learn about the rationale for evidence-based practice (EBP) and its Core Competencies: Ask, Acquire, Appraise and Interpret, Apply, and Evaluate. Areas of focus are critical thinking (e.g. asking critical questions about health claims and the sources of claims), and shared decision-making. The course provides a foundation for learning and applying more advanced and field-specific skills.

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • can discuss the nurse’s role in health promoting work and (re)habilitation enterprises for different age groups
  • can explain the terms everyday rehabilitation and (re)habilitation at home
  • can explain the nursing of children with lasting health challenges and their families
  • can discuss health counselling at the individual, group and social level
  • can describe measures to preserve life and health in the event of major accidents and in crisis and disaster situations (kun for kull 2020 studieåret 2022-2023)

Skills

The student is capable of

  • adapting and integrating theoretical and practical knowledge of the nurse's rehabilitating and health promoting function in order to promote the best possible functional level, well-being and quality of life for the individual, in cooperation with other health professions
  • identifying persons with a high risk of functional impairment early enough to implement measures to prevent a deterioration in function, and to reverse such deterioration once it has begun
  • planning and carrying out nursing measures to ensure the safe transfer of patients between different units and levels of the health services
  • planning and carrying out nursing for patients in the last phase of life and following up next-of-kin and those left behind
  • masters general first aid according to the ABC principle (kun for kull 2020 studieåret 2022-2023)

Competence

The student is capable of

  • critically reflecting on how information, communication and welfare technology can strengthen the municipality’s services
  • exchanging points of view and experience with others in the field and in this way contribute to developing good practice
  • exploring what a lack of activity and unmet psychosocial needs can lead to over time, and discussing how new measures can strengthen the traditional services provided
  • discussing his/her own professional role in an interprofessional context and initiating and contributing to interprofessional and intersectoral cooperation
  • communicating important theories, issues and solutions in the field, both orally and in writing
  • reflecting on ethical perspectives when nursing is carried out in private homes
  • engaging in new thinking and innovation processes through project work
  • reflecting on existing procedures and methods, and taking the initiative to quality improvement and implementation of new work methods
  • discussing cultural sensitivity and reflecting on the significance of cultural understanding in nursing practice in the patients' homes
  • reflecting and critically assessing ethical and legal challenges in the use of technology and digital solutions ;
  • understanding how the patients’ linguistic and cultural background might affect how quality and patient safety is addressed

Learning outcomes

Practical training: over eight weeks in the municipal health service, home-based services. Includes self-study, lectures, simulation, flipped classroom, digital learning resources and seminars.

Digital learning resources are used for parts of INTER1300 ‘Interprofessional cooperation about and with children, adolescents and their families’, including digital resource lectures with lecturers from different study programmes, relevant cases and examples. 2 Days.

Teaching and learning methods

The assessment takes its point of departure in given criteria based on learning outcomes for the course, assessment criteria, the continuous assessment, the suitability assessment and compulsory activities carried throughout the practical training. Students’ practical training can only be assessed if their attendance is sufficiently high (90%). Assessment

In this course, students will learn about mental health work, relational skills and factors that promote and harm the mental health of individuals and groups. People's resources and opportunities, but also their vulnerabilities as individuals, are areas of focus. The significance of close relationships and society's influence are important for mental health and are emphasised in the course. This includes patient phenomena such as hope and hopelessness, pain and pain relief, exhaustion and energy.

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • is capable of presenting mental health work in a historical perspective
  • is capable of explaining different theoretical perspectives on mental health disorders and mental health work: the significance of relationships, professional ethics, aesthetics, dignity and integrity in dealings with patients and next-of-kin
  • is capable of discussing how psychosis, personality disorders, anxiety, mood disorder and drug addiction can influence the patients’ fundamental needs and self-understanding
  • is capable of describing mental health and psychosocial challenges among refugees and immigrants: trauma, loss, grief and identity
  • is capable of describing how stigma, exclusion, discrimination and racism can influence mental health and psychosocial health
  • is capable of assessing what inhibits and promotes communication and how poor health and unmet care needs influence professional relations
  • is capable of describing strategies for mastery and concepts such as improvement processes, user participation, recovery and empowerment
  • is capable of explaining different understandings of mental health, disease and treatment, and how nurses can interact with patients in a culturally sensitive manner
  • is capable of understanding how health and social policy, including applicable official requirements and compulsory provisions, can be of significance to the practice of nursing in mental health work
  • is capable of discussing social and health issues, including neglect, violence, assault, drug and socio-economic problems, and can identify and follow up people with such challenges and implement necessary measures and/or treatment, or refer the patient to an expert in the field

The student

  • is capable of applying key milieu therapeutic principles, and relevant mapping tools related to patients with mental health issues and/or drug addictions
  • is capable of integrating knowledge from pathophysiology and pharmacology in the nursing of patients with mental health issues and/or drug addictions
  • is capable of applying communication and interaction skills when encountering people with mental health issues and their next-of-kin
  • is capable of establishing, maintaining and concluding relationships in academic and professional contexts
  • is capable of using relevant documentation tools on the basis of a holistic understanding
  • is capable of continuously assessing situations that entail a risk for patients and/or staff and preventing unwanted incidents
  • is capable of demonstrating counselling skills, and is capable of receiving and making use of feedback on his/her own conduct

The student is capable of

  • reflecting on his/her own professional practice and power structures when encountering people with mental health issues and drug addictions
  • reflecting on existing procedures and methods, and taking the initiative to engage in dialogue about the implementation of new knowledge and new work methods

Grading scale

Practical training: in Municipal health service/Specialist health service, Mental health (8 weeks), including self-study, simulation, digital learning resources, lectures and seminars. ;

The flipped classroom is used as a teaching method for part of the course. Digital learning resources will be made available in advance.

Digital learning resources are used for parts of INTER1300 ‘Interprofessional cooperation about and with children, adolescents and their families’, including digital resource lectures with lecturers from different study programmes, relevant cases and examples. Casework, observations and assignments related to interprofessional group work and self-study are also used. The students’ experience from practical training periods and examples from relevant practical training arenas are actively included in the work.
