Course history
  • Introduction

    In this course, you will be able to specialise in the field of supervision. You will learn about supervision, and the supervisor’s role, responsibility and function. This elective course provides basic skills in supervision of nursing students, but can also be used in other contexts, such as the guidance of colleagues, patients and next of kin. The course content combines basic theory of supervision with practical training in groups and individual supervision.

    Students who pass the course may apply for exemption from the course VEIPR6000 Supervision and assessment 1 (5 credits) in the programme Further Education in Supervision of Students in Internship (10 credits) at OsloMet.

  • Learning outcomes

    After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

    • can explain key concepts and phases of supervision
    • can describe the importance of communication and relations in supervision
    • can describe the role and function of the supervisor as a facilitator of learning
    • can describe formative and summative assessment and suitability assessment
    • can describe how it is possible to update your own skills in a chosen subject area and how to contribute to developing professional practice

    • can stimulate reflection on practice
    • can reflect on current procedures and methods, and take the initiative to engage in dialogue about the implementation of new knowledge and new work methods

    • can reflect on their supervision, role and responsibility
    • can reflect on nursing and/or health professional issues within a chosen subject area
  • Teaching and learning methods

    Self-study, joint sessions with short lectures, various supervision exercises and simulation in small groups.

  • Course requirements

    None.

  • Assessment

    Group home exam

    • In groups of up to seven students.
    • The exam period extends throughout the course.
    • Scope of 1,500 words (+/- 10%).

     

    Resit exam: A student who fails the ordinary exam can submit a reworked version once as a resit.

  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

    All aids are permitted, as long as the rules for source referencing are complied with.

  • Grading scale

    Pass/fail. One overall grade is awarded for the whole group.

  • Examiners

    One external and one internal examiner will assess at least 10% of the exam papers. The remaining papers will be assessed by two internal examiners. The external examiner’s assessment should benefit all the students. 

  • Overlapping courses

    The course overlaps 100% with SYK2840A and SYK2840B
