Course history

Introduction

Normally taught in English. Taught in Norwegian if no English-speaking students are taking the course.

In this course, you will learn to use simulation as an educational tool. Simulation is a learning method that aims to safeguard patient safety. You will develop competence to plan, organise and facilitate simulation for participants in situations that mimic a real clinical environment.

After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • can explain simulation as a method
  • can describe how simulation can contribute to increasing patient safety
  • can describe how it is possible to update your own skills in a chosen subject area and how to contribute to developing professional practice

  • can apply simulation in different contexts
  • can devise a teaching plan with simulation as a method in light of the educational learning outcome descriptions
  • can reflect on current procedures and methods, and take the initiative to engage in dialogue about the implementation of new knowledge and new work methods

 

Competence

The student

  • can reflect on their own teaching activities with simulation as a method
  • can reflect on nursing and/or health professional issues within a chosen subject area

Teaching and learning methods

Lecture, group work and practical exercises in simulation. Planning and carrying out a simulation scheme for other students.

Course requirements

None.

Assessment

Practical test

Preparation of own simulation scheme and facilitation of the case as a practical test. Groups of up to 4 students, up to one hour.

  •  In groups of up to seven students.
  • The exam period extends throughout the course.
  • Scope of 1,500 words (+/- 10%).

 

Resit exam: If the ordinary exam is not passed, the practical test can be processed once.

The exam can be given in English or Scandinavian language.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All aids are permitted, as long as the rules for source referencing are complied with.

Grading scale

Pass/fail. One overall grade is awarded for the whole group.

Examiners

Two examiners assess the exams. At least 10 % of the exam papers will be assessed by an external examiner.

The course overlaps 100% with SYK2820A and SYK2820B.
