The most important teaching and learning methods for this course are workshops, lectures, group work, studio courses and tutoring.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge:

The student has knowledge of

  • philosophy of science and quantitative research methods
  • evidence-based practice
  • system and relation perspectives in nursing
  • decision-making processes using standardised classification systems: nursing documentation, ICT and eHealth
  • development psychology, crisis theory and coping theory, personality psychology, learning, belonging and identity, sociopsychological processes (the individual and community) and how illness affects people's behaviour
  • pathological processes, prognoses and treatment forms in the following mental health disorders/challenges:

    • eating disorders
    • substance abuse problems
    • suicide-related problems
    • intellectual disabilities
    • behavioural and emotional disorders in children and young people
  • education and learning: guidance, teaching, health information and changes in health behaviour, and nurses' educational role
  • demography and epidemiology: national and global health
  • clinical examination methods and general first aid in accordance with the ABC principle

Skills:

The student

  • is skilled in using clinical examination methods and assessments
  • is capable of finding, assessing and referring to relevant research articles in order to elucidate nursing issues, both orally and in writing
  • is capable of communicating and applying educational knowledge when providing guidance to patients and next of kin
  • is capable of applying health information and knowledge of changes in health behaviour to practical issues
  • is capable of reflecting on professional ethics, fair distribution, cooperation and human rights
  • is capable of reflecting on the connection between poverty and health both nationally and globally and of describing national challenges in public health work

Competence:

The student is capable of

  • sharing opinions about ethical challenges, with particular emphasis on safeguarding patients' autonomy, integrity and dignity
  • planning and carrying out tasks related to nurses' educational role
  • documenting nursing in a legally and professionally sound manner

Teaching and learning methods

Individual or group portfolio examination. The portfolio consists of:

  • design process documentation. Various medias if possible. Students can choose to work in groups. Maximum 3 students per group.

The examination result can be appealed.

Course requirements

No restrictions.

Assessment

Grade scale A-F.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

Two internal. External examiner is used periodically.

Grading scale

The course is taken full-time over 18 weeks, two of which may comprise a theoretical introduction. Through cooperation on research activities, the students will have the opportunity to specialise in an area of psychology and in their specific area of interest/project.

The students will also work independently on the bachelor’s thesis. A supervisor from among the department’s staff will be appointed for each student.

Examiners

  • Submission and approval of an outline for the bachelor’s thesis
  • Participation in organised supervision (min 80%)

All required coursework must be approved before the student can submit their bachelor’s thesis.

Overlapping courses

Individual bachelor’s thesis with a maximum scope of 8,000 words

On application, students may be permitted to write the thesis in pairs. This is on the condition that they have collected the data together and use these in the thesis.

If the bachelor’s thesis mentions information about people and/or their behavior, OsloMet and the Department for Behavioral Sciences' current rules for privacy and consent must be observed.

It is required that the thesis be written in whole or in part from a behavioral analytical perspective. For theses that are written based on a subject field other than behavior analysis, it is expected that the thesis contains an account of and discussion of behavior analysis in relation to the thesis' subject matter.
