Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge:

The student has knowledge of

  • gerontology and pathological processes in internal medicine, somatics prognoses and treatment forms: cancer, diseases of the respiratory organs, cardiovascular diseases, the central nervous system and endocrinology diseases, skin diseases, autoimmune diseases, haematology and geriatrics
  • pharmacology and drug administration related to relevant diseases
  • the state and municipalities, and health and social policy: the development of the welfare state and the relationship between social development, standard of living and individual health and social issues
  • health legislation
  • the health service in Norway: prioritisation and organisation, health policy challenges in big cities, and organisation and management in various service areas
  • nursing in a multicultural society

Skills:

The student is capable of

  • applying knowledge of pathological processes, prognoses and types of treatment as a basis for understanding ill persons, to observe ill persons and participate in medical treatment
  • applying knowledge of medical and natural science topics as a basis for nursing actions
  • applying knowledge of the state and municipalities, and health and social policy as a basis for nursing actions and seeing the relationship between health and culture
  • reflecting on the nursing profession's position in the health services

Competence:

The student

  • is capable of disseminating subject matter on the state and municipalities, and health and social policy, both orally and in writing

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, group work, written assignments, supervision, seminars, exercises in the simulation and skills centre and self-study.

Course requirements

The following coursework must have been approved in order for a student to be permitted to take the exam:

  • Assignment 1. Individual subject note. Scope: 1500 words (+/- 20 %). Feedback on the subject note from the lecturer and fellow student(s).
  • 100% attendance at the seminar on welfare and the health services.
  • 100% attendance at the workshop on pathophysiology.
  • Assignment 2. Group subject note. Scope: 1,500 words (+/- 20 %). Feedback on the subject note from the lecturer and fellow student(s).

Assessment

Supervised individual written exam, 5 hours.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

None.

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F.

Examiners

All answer papers are assessed by two examiners. A minimum of twenty per cent of the exam papers will be assessed by an external examiner. The external examiner's assessment shall benefit all the students.
