After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has broad knowledge of basic human physiological needs: respiration and circulation, activity, sleep and rest, fluid and nutrition, and elimination
  • has knowledge of basic nutrition and energy-giving and non-energy-giving substances
  • has knowledge of basic pharmacology
  • has knowledge of normal flora and pathogenic microbes, the chain of infection, resistance and the microbes' pathogenesis
  • has knowledge of professional communication
  • is capable of explaining nursing actions using relevant knowledge

Skills

The student

  • is capable of carrying out practical procedures in connection with covering the patient's basic physiological needs in line with technical, ethical and hygiene principles
  • is capable of explaining purposes, making observations and assessing risk elements when carrying out procedures
  • masters cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using a defibrillator and the Heimlichs manoeuvre

Competence

The student

  • has insight into what leads to basic needs being threatened and illness caused and how illness manifests in people through vital signs and symptoms
  • has insight into nursing issues relating to the patient's basic physiological needs and resources
  • is capable of disseminating natural science literature relating to the patient's basic needs both orally and in writing
  • acts in an empathetic, respectful and reliable manner and in line with professional ethical guidelines

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, group work, written assignments, supervision, workshops, exercises in the simulation and skills centre and self-study.

Course requirements

The following coursework must have been approved in order for a student to be permitted to take the exam:

  • Minimum attendance of 80% in study group sessions
  • 100% attendance at workshops
  • Practical test at the simulation and skills centre. Students have a total of three attempts at taking the test in each year of the programme. The tests are only given before the ordinary exam and are conditional on 100% attendance in all topics at the simulation and skills centre. The topics are: 1. CPR using a defibrillator, 2. infection prevention, 3. positioning and elimination, 4. personal hygiene, 5. feeding help and oral care, 6. vital signs and special oral care, 7. drug administration and subcutaneous infections.
  • Assignment 1: Group subject note. Scope: 2,000 words (+/- 10%). Feedback from the lecturer on the subject note.
  • Assignment 2: Individual subject note. Scope: 1,500 words (+/- 10 %). Feedback from the lecturer on the subject note.

Assessment

Supervised individual written exam, 4 hours.

None.

Grade scale A-F

Examiners

Each exam is assessed by two examiners, one external and one internal.
