SP9250 Action Research and Practice Research Course description

The course gives an introduction to the historical background and development of action research and practice research (including participatory action research, PAR, and participatory practice research, PPR). Research traditions, theories and methodological issues across a variety of disciplines within social and human sciences and professions are examined.

The course covers theories of science suited for positioning the epistemological and ontological grounding of action and practice research. Important questions include the following: What are the characteristics of action research and practice research? Which view of knowledge build the foundation for these research approaches? What possibilities for developing knowledge exist within different traditions in action research and practice research? What is the potential for carrying out innovative research?

The course includes knowledge on how to apply these research approaches in designing and developing the student’s own research projects. How to design an action or practice research project that is manageable within the resources of a PhD project is given special attention. Ethical challenges are highlighted and critically reflected on, such as power relations between researchers and other actors, anonymity and confidentiality as well as conflicts in the collaboration.

Completing the course will give the the PhD candidates the following learning outcome, sectioned into knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

The PhD candidate

• has in-depth knowledge of the theories of science relating to action research and practice research
• has in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and methodological perspectives that form the basis for action research and practice research, including advanced knowledge about co-production and research with other stakeholders
• can evaluate the expediency and application of methods and research processes within participatory research
• has in-depth knowledge about research ethics significant for processes within action research and practice research
• has advanced knowledge about how action research and practice research can contribute to the development of innovative knowledge and methods

Skills:

The PhD candidate

• can analyse and reflect critically on epistemological and methodological issues in action research and practice research
• can plan and carry out action research and practice research projects of high standard and can handle complex academic issues related to knowledge production and research ethics
• can challenge established knowledge and practice in the field

General Competence:

The PhD candidate

• can identify relevant and innovative research questions for action research and practice research
• can identify relevant ethical issues within participatory research to carry out his/her research with scholarly integrity
• can initiate and manage complex research projects based on collaboration with different stakeholders
• can communicate the research to stakeholders and academic debates through recognized channels, both national and international

The course is based on lectures, self-study and study groups/group work.

Participants will be asked to give presentations of their projects, their experiences from action research and practice research. The presentations will form the basis for discussions where active participation will be expected, both in presenting one's own ideas and providing feedback on the ideas of others. The presentations must be put into writing (1-2 pages) and distributed to the teachers and other course participants by the stipulated deadline.

Course attendance (80%) in lectures and group sessions (15 hours).

Present preliminary paper (1-2 pages) and deliver paper for assessment.

Candidates must write a paper of 3000 words +/- 10%.

The paper for assessment must be handed in on a digital platform by a specified date. The paper must fulfill source reference and quotation technique requirements. A passed paper is a precondition for being awarded the 5 ECTS credits. If the paper is awarded a fail grade, the candidate can submit a revised paper once, by a specified deadline.

Teaching will take the form of lectures, groups- and class discussions.

Studenten

Generelle kompetanse

Studenten

• har bevissthet om hvordan holdninger og kulturbakgrunn påvirker en som historieforteller
• har forståelse for hvordan teknikk brukes som kunstnerisk og kommunikativt grep i kreativ dokumentarfilm
• kan reflektere over hva produksjonene deres kommuniserer til publikum, løsrevet fra egne ønsker og intensjoner
• kjenner til nytenkning og innovasjonsprosesser innen dokumentarfilmområdet  

Alle arbeidskrav og obligatorisk tilstedeværelse må være innfridd og være vurdert til godkjent før studentene kan framstille seg til eksamen.

Arbeidskrav

• Filmteknisk kurs, om man ikke kan dokumentere egen kompetanse.
• Idé- og prosjektutvikling og produksjon i gruppe.
• To korte øvelsesfilmer.
• Individuell utviklingsoppgave: Oppgaven skal ha et omfang på maks 20 sider og er en individuell utviklingsoppgave av sluttfilmen og skal vise hvordan studenten vurderer sin filmfortellende kunnskap, evne til å vurdere hvordan produksjonen kommuniserer, hvilke begrensninger som påvirker sluttresultatet og hvordan den kreative prosessen har forløpt.

Obligatorisk tilstedeværelse i undervisningen

Studentene kan ikke ha mer enn 20 prosent fravær i undervisnings- og veiledningssituasjoner der det er krav om tilstedeværelse og aktiv deltakelse:

• Individuell- og gruppeveiledning, samt prosessevaluering.
• Interne filmvisninger og visninger av andre studenters arbeider.
• Forelesinger med inviterte gjestelærere.

Sykdom fritar ikke fra arbeidskravene. Studenter som samlet har mer enn 20 prosent fravær der det er krav om tilstedeværelse og aktiv deltakelse, vil ikke få avlegge eksamen. Studenter som på grunn av sykdom eller annen dokumentert gyldig årsak ikke innfrir arbeidskrav innen fristen, kan få forlenget frist. Dette avtales i hvert enkelt tilfelle med den aktuelle læreren.

Studenter som står i fare for å overskride fraværskvoten, får skriftlig melding om dette.

Filmkunst 1 - dokumentar er et deltidsstudium med undervisning organisert over to semestre. Undervisningen gjennomføres som samlinger.. Det blir utarbeidet undervisningsplaner med utgangspunkt i emneplanen. Undervisningsplanen angir mer detaljerte krav om tilstedeværelse i undervisning, filmvisninger og støttelitteratur. Disse blir utlevert ved studiestart.

En viktig del av studiet er å se og vurdere utvalgte filmer. Studiet er sterkt prosessorientert og bygger på studentenes egenaktivitet både praktisk og teoretisk.  Læringen er i stor grad basert på praktiske filmøvelser i samarbeid med andre. Det legges vekt på helhetlige filmproduksjonsoppgaver der studentene prøver ut forskjellige kreative dokumentarfilmformer, samt foretar selvstendige valg i forhold til tema, konsept og medvirkende.

Studentene vil få veiledning, individuelt og i grupper, i hele produksjonsfasen, fra idé- og konseptutvikling, forproduksjon, produksjon, etterarbeid og frem til prosessevalueringen. I studiet blir det lagt vekt på sammenheng mellom læringsutbytte, innhold, arbeidsmåter og vurderingsformer. Studentene skal delta aktivt i vurderingen der egne og andres prosesser blir gjenstand for kritisk gjennomgang. Den løpende vurderingen av studentenes resultater og studieinnsats skal stimulere til videre faglig utvikling.

Forelesinger, workshops, egenproduksjon, produksjon i grupper, diskusjoner, visninger, vurdering og ekskursjoner knyttes til studentenes forståelse for faget og utvikling av egen praksis. Det kan arrangeres studietur til aktuelle filmfestivaler/miljøer.
