Course history

Introduction

In this course, the students will participate in authentic work situations in fields where social work is practised. Social work is practised in many arenas and the practical training placements are varied. The students are offered practical training placements that are relevant to the programme and social workers’ field of work. Students will practise interacting with individuals and groups who are in contact with the social service, health and welfare systems.

Required preliminary courses

The student must have passed exams corresponding to 20 credits from the autumn semester.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should have the following overall learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student:

  • has knowledge of how social, socio-economic and health-related challenges have consequences for the individual and next-of-kin 
  • has knowledge of social problems that apply to the groups of clients at the practical training establishment 
  • has knowledge of the organisation of the practical training establishment and relevant collaborative agencies and other services in the city district/municipality
  • has knowledge of relevant social policy and legal authority relating to the tasks at the practical training establishment
  • has knowledge of how social work is carried out at the practical training establishment and relevant collaborative institutions
  • is aware of the risk of undesirable incidents in social work
  • is familiar with what characterises interprofessional cooperation in the practical training establishment 

Skills

The student:

  • can apply different theoretical perspectives in social work with users at the practical training establishment 
  • can apply different methodological approaches at their practical training establishment.
  • can use their communication skills when interacting with individuals
  • can use the digital tools in operation at the practical training establishment
  • can use critical reflection on their own practice 

General competence

The student:

  • has insight in different people’s living conditions and social vulnerability when interacting with the practical training establishment’s users 
  • has insight into how power manifests itself in interactions between the practical training establishment and the users 
  • is familiar with the importance of digital communication in professional practice and interaction
  • has increased awareness of their own understanding of social problems and situations
  • can reflect on their own attitudes and ethical issues relating to the values and practice of social work

Teaching and learning methods

There will be lectures and seminars in this subject.

The student follows the practice site's work routines and working hours, and must have study days throughout the practice period.

The student receives weekly guidance from the supervisor. The guidance can be given both individually and in groups.

Course requirements

Language of instruction: Norwegian

The course focuses on the further development and final individual assessment of the student's dental technology skills and action competence in the chosen specialisation, fixed or removable prosthetics. The integration of theoretical knowledge and reflection on clinical experience from external practical training will contribute to an increased understanding of the complexity of different cases and the diversity of patients. Laboratory technology and material technology solutions, challenges and limitations are key topics in the course. Critical self-assessment is emphasised to ensure that the quality of the product is in line with the professional requirements and provisions issued by the authorities.

Breakdown of credits: Theory 2 credits and skills training 13 credits.

Assessment

Passed first year and passed TAB2000, TAB2100, TAB2300/TAB2400 from the second year. TAB1050 is exempt from the progression requirement.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of skills and general competence:

Skills

The student can

  • independently produce oral prosthetics in the chosen specialisation at a clinically acceptable level
  • independently plan and make responsible choices in relation to materials and suitable method for producing oral prosthetics in the chosen specialisation
  • carry out necessary laboratory technology, morphological and design adaptations with a particular focus on patient adaptation in a social perspective
  • apply the precise specialist terminology of the profession and supervise fellow students, other dental health personnel and patients in dental technology issues
  • evaluate the design of the dental technology product and its practical execution in relation to professional assessment criteria and theoretical and research-based knowledge

General competence

The student

  • can present and exchange points of view and experience with others in the field about treatment planning and production of dental technology products in line with applicable guidelines and professional and ethical requirements
  • has insight into relevant academic and professional issues relating to the choice of dental technology solutions in relation to the patient’s right of co-determination, socio-economic factors and HSE
  • can assess and refer to research results to explain and update their actions in their own professional practice
  • can critically assess the risk of undesirable incidents relating to the use of dental materials, production equipment and processes

Grading scale

The work and teaching methods include demonstration lectures, self-study, seminars and skills training in the university laboratories. The skills training is preparation for the exam and provides the student with the opportunity to further develop their skills relating to the production of relevant dental technology products in the chosen specialisation, fixed or removable prosthetics.

Parts of the skills training in the laboratory is supervised. The student also receives individual supervision and feedback in relation to their own study progression. The two last weeks of the course are dedicated to individual practical exams in the university laboratories. During the exam, the student must demonstrate quality and independence in the execution of their work on the practical work assignments allocated in their programme option.

Examiners

The following must have been approved in order for the student to take the exam:

  • a minimum attendance of 90 % at demonstration lectures and lab exercises
  • a minimum attendance of 80 % in skills training, seminars and compulsory supervision

Course contact person

Individual practical exam with a written self-assessment in the chosen specialisation, eight working days.Scope:

Specialisation A - Fixed prosthetics, six to eight practical tooth replacement units produced in the university laboratories.

Specialisation B - Removable prosthetics, six to eight practical tooth replacement units created in the university laboratories.

An overall grade is awarded for the exam based on an overall academic assessment. All the submitted practical tooth replacement units must be assessed as A-E in order for the student to pass the exam.

Resits/rescheduled exam: If one or more of the practical tooth replacement units are awarded a fail grade, the student has the right to submit a reworked version once.
