Course history

Introduction

This course provides a critical review of theoretical perspectives on citizens' encounters with the welfare state. This course provides an overview of some of these theories.

The course covers theories that emphasize a focus on individual, rational actors, those applying structural and functionalist explanatory models, those that emphasize social reproduction and feedback mechanisms in society to those that emphasize social construction and interactional processes.

The course provides training in how to apply select theories to analysis of empirical evidence when studying and interpreting phenomena within social welfare and health policy research.

Studenten skal etter å ha fullført emnet ha følgende totale læringsutbytte definert i kunnskap, ferdigheter og generell kompetanse:

Kunnskap

Studentene har

  • fordypet kunnskap om anvendelse av biopsykososialt perspektiv i møte med barn og familie
  • kjennskap til anvendelse av noen utviklingspsykologiske perspektiver i forståelse av barn og familieliv, samt salutogenese og resiliens
  • kritisk fundert kunnskap om anvendte kategoriseringssystemer
  • fordypet kunnskap om tilstandsbilder og behandlingsformer, herunder brukerinvolvering
  • kunnskap om foreldreskap hvor foreldre er psykisk syke/har rusproblemer

Ferdigheter

Studentene kan

  • ved hjelp av biopsykososiale forståelser og utviklingspsykologiske perspektiver analysere i behandlingsarbeid
  • gjenkjenne ulike tilstandsbilder
  • begrunne iverksettelsen av relevante behandlingstiltak for barn som strever, og for foreldre som strever
  • vurdere nødvendigheten av samarbeid med andre instanser eventuelt adekvat videre henvisning til annen behandling eller utredning

Generell kompetanse

Studenten kan

  • tenke kritisk på kunnskapsgrunnlaget innen psykisk helsevern for barn og unge
  • evaluere egne handlinger og iverksette endringstiltak
  • utøve faglig praktisk dømmekraft i behandlingsarbeid

Teaching and learning methods

The course will comprise a mix of lecture, discussions and hands-on exercises. Students will end the course with a paper and a presentation in which they discuss one of the theories covered in the curriculum. There will be a meeting set aside for student presentations.

Course requirements

For å kunne framstille seg til eksamen må følgende arbeidskrav være godkjent:

  • Ett individuelt skriftlig arbeidskrav om et nærmere angitt tema knyttet til kunnskapsgrunnlaget for emnet. Omfanget skal være 5 sider. Arbeidskravet skal godkjennes av faglærer.

Assessment

The assessment consists of an individual six hour school exam.

Grading scale

Students are awarded grades on a descending scale from A to E for pass and F for fail.

Examiners

The exam is graded by an internal and an external examiner.

A random selection consisting of at least 25% of the exam papers will be graded by both an internal and external examiner. This will inform the grading of the remaining exam papers.
