Course history

Introduction

The course deals with examination methodology, case history and documentation linked to emergency medical conditions. The course also provides an introduction to tentative diagnosis and emergency medical intervention.

Required preliminary courses

Passed the first year of the programme, with the exception of the course PARA1500.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of clinical examination, tentative diagnosis and intervention linked to emergency medical conditions
  • has knowledge of the progression of the most prevalent emergency conditions
  • has knowledge of how different work methods, measures and medical technology equipment are to be used in different emergency medical situations
  • has knowledge of drug use for emergency medical conditions
  • has knowledge of how aging can affect the development and treatment of emergency medical conditions
  • has knowledge of decision-making in emergency medicine and choosing treatment and transport strategies
  • has knowledge of legislation linked to the disclosure and reporting obligation, duty to act and notice of death
  • is familiar with patient record documentation
  • has knowledge of quantitative methodology

Skills

The student

  • is capable of assessing the connections between symptoms and emergency medical conditions
  • is capable of performing an independent systematic clinical examination and then implementing measures and choosing work methods in cooperation with a fellow student
  • is capable of implementing the right measures for the different emergency medical conditions
  • is capable of actively participating in advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (adult)
  • is capable of interpreting electrocardiograms (ECG) in connection with emergency medical conditions
  • is capable of using relevant monitoring equipment
  • masters basic airway management
  • is capable of processing and applying quantitative research results in written presentations

General competence

The student

  • is capable of planning and completing work tasks linked to tentative diagnosis and intervention in the most important emergency medical conditions
  • is capable of taking and documenting a case history, and carrying out and documenting clinical examinations and measures

Teaching and learning methods

The work and teaching methods vary between lectures, simulation and skills training, observational practice, seminars, study groups and self-study.

Practical training

The students do approximately five days of observational practice at an accident and emergency department. The students shall also complete skills training and simulation exercises in systematic patient examination and documentation, decision-making in emergency medicine and choice of treatment, advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (adult), systematic interpretation of electrocardiograms (ECG), use of monitoring equipment and basic airway management.

Course requirements

The following required coursework must be approved before the student can take the exam:

  • minimum attendance of 80% at seminars and study groups
  • minimum attendance of 90% in observational practice in an accident and emergency department
  • minimum attendance of 90% at simulation and skills training
  • individual written reflection note from the accident and emergency department, up to 800 words
  • written assignment in groups of up to 3 students, 1,000 words (+/- 10%)
  • practical test in advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (adult)

Exam form: Supervised individual written exam, 6 hours

Examiners

Kunnskapsområdet omfatter det å se, forstå og verdsette barns estetiske uttrykksformer, og hvordan studenten kan bli medskaper i en levende barnehagekultur. Kunnskapsområdet tydeliggjør barnehagelærerens ansvar for å gi barn tilgang til kulturelle tradisjoner og aktuelle strømninger i kunst- og kulturliv. Utvikling av praktiske ferdigheter, estetisk oppmerksomhet og skapende evner utgjør en sentral del av kunnskapsområdet. Studenten skal få erfaring med hvordan tilrettelegge for at barn kan utvikle et rikt uttrykksrepertoar gjennom allsidige sanseopplevelser, kroppslige erfaringer, tid til lek og eksperimentering, refleksjon og kommunikasjon i et bærekraftig perspektiv. Studentene skal få erfaring med å lede skapende prosesser innen drama, forming og musikk.

Kunnskapsområdets mål er å bruke kunstfaglige arbeidsformer i en tydelig profesjonsrolle, som inviterer til utforskende og skapende virksomhet og ser sammenheng mellom estetiske læringsprosesser og barns lek, læring og danning. Studenten skal utvikle ulike sider ved barnehagelærerrollen, forstå sin rolle som kunst- og kulturformidler i barnehagen og ta del i hverdagslivet i barnehagen. Studenten skal delta aktivt i barns lek og formelle og uformelle samspills- og læringssituasjoner for alle barn uavhengig av alder og funksjonsnivå.
