Course history

Introduction

The bachelor's thesis shall be a development project in a field that is related to prosthetics and orthotics. Students write their theses in pairs. This usually means that two students at the Bachelor's Programme in Prosthetics and Orthotics write a thesis together, but it is also possible for students to write their bachelor's thesis together with a student from the Faculty of Technology or from another programme at the Faculty of Health Sciences. Students are encouraged to become affiliated to a research environment at the university or at an external institution. The programme will assist in identifying relevant research environments.

Required preliminary courses

The student must have passed the second year of the programme.

Learning outcomes

After completing the module, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has in-depth knowledge of the focus area of the bachelor's thesis

Skills

The student is capable of

  • preparing a research question and project outline
  • choosing, giving grounds for and using a relevant scientific method
  • obtaining and discussing relevant research articles and other specialist literature
  • discussing, assessing and reflecting on the research question and choice of methods in relation to findings and results

General competence

The student is capable of

  • planning and carrying out varied tasks and projects that take place over time and contribute to theoretical and/or practical development
  • critically reflecting on research ethics issues and guidelines relating to project work

disseminating, discussing and presenting the results of his/her own project in writing

Teaching and learning methods

The bachelor's thesis shall be an independent academic work. Seminars and supervision sessions, where students are given the opportunity to develop their topics and research questions, are organised in the fifth semester. Academic supervisors are assigned after the project outline has been submitted within the stipulated deadline. Students are entitled to six hours of academic supervision.

Course requirements

The following coursework requirements must be met before the student can take the exam:

  • the project outline must be submitted within the stipulated deadline
  • minimum attendance of 80% at seminars and academic supervision sessions

Exam content: The learning outcomes

Exam form: Bachelor-s thesis written in pairs over a ten-week period

Scope: 10,500-11,500 words

Resit exam

The students rework the thesis. If a fail grade is awarded for the thesis twice, the students must write a new thesis.

Examiners

Two examiners will assess all theses. An external examiner will assess at least of 20% of the theses. The external examiner-s assessment shall benefit all the students.
