Course history

Introduction

This course consists of a six-week period (a total of 180 hrs) of supervised practical training in an orthopaedic technology enterprise. The focus is on important prosthetics and orthotics theory and clinical practice, with an emphasis on users with transtibial (below knee) and transfemoral level (above knee) amputations. Documenting the work in writing and communicating with patients and professionals are important parts of the course.

  • can give an account of the framework and organisation of the practical training enterprise

  • can apply knowledge of prosthetics and orthotics to problems, methods and processes at the practical training enterprise
  • can use discipline-specific methods, tools and equipment in clinical practice at the practical training enterprise
  • can use clinical reasoning to integrate theory and practice in areas relating to transtibial and transfemoral prostheses
  • can search for, discuss and apply related literature, articles and research results on lower limbs
  • can apply the conceptual model of International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and use outcome measures in a clinical context

General competence

The student

  • can identify and reflect on professional and ethical issues and dilemmas encountered during the placement
  • can work in accordance with professional ethical guidelines
  • can take responsibility and demonstrate initiative, cooperation skills and independence during the placement
  • can document and present user-related work both orally and in writing
  • can communicate in an empathetic and respectful manner with patients, his/her supervisor and other staff at the orthopaedic technology enterprise
  • can reflect on his/her own work performance and development

Teaching and learning methods

The work and teaching methods include self-study, interprofessional cooperative learning and external practical training under supervision.

Course requirements

The following required coursework must be approved to pass the practical training:

  • 90 % attendance during practical training
  • six reflection notes of 700-1,400 words. The reflection notes must be submitted to the programme on a weekly basis.

Assessment

Assessment of practical training: The assessment is based on the learning outcomes for the course and the continuous assessment that students are subject to throughout the placement period.

The student’s practical training can only be assessed if their attendance is sufficiently high (90%). For more information, see the general part of the programme description about practical training assessment.

Resit assessment: Students who fail a period of practical training normally have to retake the whole practical training period.

Grading scale

The main purpose of the course is to improve the students' ability to communicate in English both in writing and orally in a professional business context. The course is cross-curricular since a large part of the syllabus is related to subjects within business and economics. It will prepare the students to deal with real situations in the business world. The course is organized around three main areas: British and American finance and economies, internal business communication and external business communication.

Language of instruction is English.
