Course history

Introduction

The course requires management experience. The students will practice approaches and skills that make them better equipped to fulfil the leadership role. Leadership in practice includes leadership characteristics, skills and conduct, communication, cooperation and conflict management, the leader role and leadership as interaction and teambuilding, as well as topics specifically relating to women and leadership.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

 

The student has

 

  • in-depth insight into management theories with particular relevance to the practice of management

  • in-depth knowledge of ethical challenges associated with the manager role

  • in-depth knowledge of conflict and conflict management

 

Skills

 

The student is capable of

 

  • working systematically on their own leadership challenges

  • communicating and cooperating in relation to the leadership role

  • analysing conflicts and dealing with different types of conflicts

  • facilitating learning and teambuilding

 

Competence

 

The student is capable of

 

  • applying knowledge and skills to prepare interaction processes with colleagues and other leaders

  • communicating about relevant issues and analyses in the leadership field

Content

The course consists of three main components:

 

  • Developing knowledge of leadership

  • Greater awareness of the student's own conduct as a leader

  • A written assignment on leadership challenges in his/her own work situation (home exam)

 

The knowledge part comprises a critical review and discussion of key topics from the syllabus applied in relation to the students' own employment sector.

Teaching and learning methods

A significant part of the learning will take place through the students' own experiences and work experience. This will be facilitated through group work, exercises and work-related assignments. Between teaching sessions, the students will receive assignments related to the course activities.

Course requirements

Some parts of the course require active participation. There is therefore a compulsory attendance requirement for these parts. Compulsory attendance is considered a coursework requirement and must be complied with in order to take the exam. Compulsory attendance will be stipulated in more detail at the start of the semester.

Assessment

The students will take a written individual home exam over two weeks.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

Grading scale

The grade given is Pass/Fail.

Examiners

External examiners are used in cases of doubt about whether a pass grade should be awarded and for spot check assessments of approx. 25% of the answer papers. Both external and internal examiners can be used for all answer papers if special academic considerations so indicate.
