Course history

Introduction

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the transition of migrants from arrival to work and capacity building through education for various migrant groups. The course takes up the issue of employment in various types of work and unemployment. Other themes are the operation and function of public integration programmes, the study of discrimination, competence about diversity and the framework for employee protection. Social dumping and discretionary inequalities in work and capacity building will be covered.

Learning outcomes

Have an understanding of the meaning of work life and education for integration of migrants in Norway. Have an understanding of inclusion and exclusion mechanisms in Norway-s labour markets and education systems.

Knowledge

The student has knowledge of

  • how work life functions in connection with various migrant groups
  • discrimination and how various types of discrimination can be overcome
  • the Introduction Programme and other measures for increasing integration of migrants into work life
  • work possibilities for migrants from the EEA-area
  • vulnerability tied to unemployment for migrant groups
  • the risk of marginalization for those on the periphery of work life
  • the intersectional effects of gender, class and ethnicity
  • alternative approaches for evaluating integration measures

Skills

The student is able to

  • understand recent shifts in the labor market impacting migrants
  • account for challenges tied to the risk of marginalization for those on the periphery of work life
  • see challenges tied to the differing educational pathways available to migrants

General competence

The student will be able to

  • reflect over the meaning of work and education for integration into Norwegian society
  • understand the role of work life as a social arena in connection with various migrant groups
  • critical reflect over relevant mechanisms in society that might lead to inclusion or exclusion of immigrants in the labour market and educational system

Teaching and learning methods

The course is based on lectures, class exercises, homework assignments and literature. Students are expected to actively participate in the course meetings, with an emphasis on dialogue.

Assessment

Emnet omhandler rettslige og sosiologiske perspektiver på arbeidet med barn og unge i ulike institusjoner. Det settes særlig fokus på menneskerettslige og sosiologiske perspektiver på makt- og tvangsbruk mot barn og unge, og på spenningen mellom omsorg og kontroll ved utøvelsen av barnevernsfaglig arbeid. 

Permitted exam materials and equipment

Studenten må ha fullført og bestått 1.studieår av bachelorstudium i barnevern.

Grading scale

Undervisningen vil bestå av forelesninger, seminarundervisning og egenstudier med oppgaveløsning.

Examiners

For å kunne framstille seg til eksamen må studenten ha følgende godkjente arbeidskrav:

1. Ett skriftlig arbeidskrav.

Arbeidskravet må være gjennomført og godkjent innen fastlagt frist for at studenten skal kunne framstille seg til eksamen. Dersom arbeidskravet ikke blir godkjent, gis det anledning til å kunne levere en forbedret versjon én gang innen angitt frist.

2. INTERACT - INTER1200

Følgende arbeidskrav må være godkjent:

Innlevert individuell logg. Omfang: 500 ord +/- 10%. Loggen forutsetter deltakelse på seminar over to dager. Fravær medfører en individuell kompensatorisk oppgave.
