MINF6200 Immigration Law Course description

The aim of this course is to introduce the main legal concepts and principles of immigration law. The course will take into account the most important legal rules on the topic, focusing especially on the mechanisms and issues related to the right of EU/EEA and non-EU citizens to live and work in Norway. With this purpose, it will explore not only the Norwegian legal rules, but also the relevant EU/EEA provisions and the international dimension. Both voluntary (e.g. family and work) and forced (refugee) immigration will be considered.

Knowledge:

The student will have knowledge of:

• The main legal concepts and principles of immigration law

• Norwegian main legal rules on the topic

• The EU/EEA dimension (free movement, right to family life, etc.)

• Concepts and challenges of refugee protection and asylum

Skills:

The student will be able to:

• Solve issues of immigration law independently, e.g. by distinguishing different types of migration and understanding which legal rules apply on the specific cases

• Identify and analyze critically national and international legal sources on the topic

• Understand the wide scope of immigration law and discuss the connection between the Norwegian legal system and the European and international dimensions

General competence:

The student will be able to:

• Reflect critically and write on topics related to migration

• Use English terminology connected to the topics studied

The course is based on lectures, homework assignments, and literature.

A written digital examination of four hours.

The exam must be written in English.

Material allowed during the exam:

• Dictionary (English-Norwegian or English-foreign language)

• Legal documents (e.g. Acts, Conventions, Agreements, etc.)

Grading scale A - F.

All the exam papers will be assessed by an internal examiner. A selection of at least 25% of the exam papers will be assessed by an external examiner. An external examiner will also be used when there is doubt about whether an exam paper should be awarded a pass grade. The grades awarded to exam papers assessed by the external and internal examiner will be used to determine the level of all exam papers.
