Course history

Introduction

The course provides an overview of the philosophy of science and research methods relevant for research and development work in aesthetic sciences, creative practices and human interaction. The philosophy of science will give insights into different traditions and paradigms, including practice-based and practice-led research. The course presents a breadth of research methods and scientific positions. Research ethics are included in the course. The course will form the basis for work on the master’s thesis.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student:

  • has in-depth knowledge of scientific theories, traditions and paradigms relevant to aesthetic sciences, creative practice and human interaction
  • has in-depth knowledge of different research methodological perspectives as a basis for analysis and reflection on content and practice in their own specialisation
  • has broad knowledge of research ethics relevant to their own specialisation

Skills

The student:

  • can discuss and compare different, relevant scientific traditions and paradigms
  • can discuss research methodological choices and apply his/her own insights to formulate academic reasoning
  • can assess different ethical perspectives related to the research process

General competence The student:

  • has knowledge of different methods of knowledge acquisition and source criticism in scientific publishing
  • can apply and communicate their knowledge with research methodological argumentation

Teaching and learning methods

The teaching alternates between lectures, seminars and workshops, as well as self-study. Dialogue and reflection related to theory and practice are central. Students are encouraged to establish study groups. The teaching does not necessarily address all aspects of the course, but these must be covered by the students themselves through reading of syllabus literature and discussion in study groups.

Course requirements

The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can take the exam:

  • Participate actively with prepared presentations in group work

Assessment

Individual written home exam over five days.

3000-4000 Words.

The result can be appealed.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All aids are permitted.

Grading scale

Pass/fail.

Examiners

Two internal examiners. External examiners are used regularly.
