Introduction
The course consists of work on the project description for the master's thesis for students who have taken further education programmes at other institutions and had part of that education recognised as part of the Master's Programme. Work on the project description in preparation for the work on the master's thesis takes place in parallel with the course MBARN5100/BARN6100 Paediatric Nursing.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:
Knowledge: The student
- has advanced knowledge within the paediatric nurse's functions and areas of responsibility
- has in-depth knowledge about the experiences, reactions and needs of children, parents and siblings when a child is acutely, critically or chronically ill, in a multicultural perspective
- has knowledge of nursing ethics and different ethical guidelines
- is capable of analysing problems relating to paediatric nursing on the basis of the discipline's history, traditions, distinctive nature and place in society
Skills: The student
- is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to different sources of information and of using them to structure and formulate paediatric nursing argumentation
- is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to existing theories and methods in paediatric nursing
- is capable of using relevant methods for research and quality-related work in an independent manner in the field of paediatric nursing
Competence: The student
- is capable of analysing relevant ethical issues in paediatric nursing based on discipline knowledge, research, experience and patient knowledge

Teaching and learning methods
Lectures, group work and seminars together with students taking the course MBARN5100/BARN6100 Paediatric Nursing. The course also entails a high degree of self-study.
Course requirements
The following coursework requirements must be met before a student can receive an assessment for the course:
1. The paediatric nurse's function and responsibility for caring for acutely and/or critically ill children.
- The students prepare their own research questions.
- Carried out in groups of 3-5 students.
- Scope: 3,000 words (+/- 20%).
- The assignment must be written in accordance with the section Assessment of written work in the Assessment chapter of the programme description.
- The syllabus selected by the students must be used in the assignment.
- The students receive written feedback from the lecturer.
2. Assessment of summarised research relating to practical training.
- The students prepare a research question that is relevant to practical training.
- Individual assignment. Scope: 1,500 words (+/- 20%).
- The assignment must be written in accordance with the section Assessment of written work in the Assessment chapter of the programme description.
- Practical experience and up-to-date research must be used in the assignment.
- The students receive feedback from the lecturer.
3. Quality assessment of a procedure chosen by the students pursuant to the criteria of the AGREE-II tool.
- Carried out in groups of up to three students.
- Scope: 3,000 words (+/- 20%)
- The assignment must be written in accordance with the section Assessment of written work in the Assessment chapter of the programme description.
- The students receive written feedback from the lecturer.
4. Approved attendance at the following compulsory lectures:

Assessment
A written assignment written individually or in groups of up to three students from the Master's Programme/Advanced Programme in Paediatric Nursing. The assignment should either comprise a project description for a research work or quality-related work, or a systematic overview of research on a relevant topic.
The project description must be based on a literature review and be written in accordance with the section Assessment of written work in the Assessment chapter of the programme description.
Up to four hours of supervision is provided per assignment. Students who fail the assignment are offered two more hours of supervision.
Scope: 5,000 words (+/- 20%).
Permitted exam materials and equipment
All aids are permitted, as long as the rules for source referencing are complied with.
Grading scale
Grade scale A-F.
For group exams, all the students in the group are awarded the same grade. Students who are awarded a fail grade (F) are given one opportunity to submit a reworked version of the assignment.
Examiners
All answer papers are assessed by two examiners, one of whom must be external.
