Course history

Introduction

This course gives an introduction to how organs and organ systems function in relation to each other and how pathophysiological processes and medical conditions start, develop and are treated. The course also includes knowledge about microbiology, infectious diseases, risk of infection and infection control related to infection prevention work. Furthermore, knowledge about pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles, interactions and side effects of pharmaceuticals are introduced. Pain physiology, assessment and management are also topics covered in this course. This knowledge forms a necessary basis for the student to be able to observe, evaluate and identify symptoms in current patient groups.

 

The course is taught in English, but Norwegian if no English-speaking students follow the course.

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The student

  • can discuss how organs and organ systems function and how pathophysiological processes and medical conditions start, develop and are observed and treated

  • can discuss microbiology, infectious diseases, risk of infection and infection control related to infection prevention work

  • can critically assess antibiotic use and the development of resistance

  • can discuss pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles

  • can assess the effects and side effects of pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of acutely and critically ill patients

  • can discuss surgical stress response and postoperative complications

  • can discuss laws and regulations that regulate the use of medical equipment in order to use the equipment in a safe and safe manner and prevent patient injury

  • can discuss fluid and transfusion therapy

 

 

Skills

The student

  • can analyse and take a critical approach to existing theories on pathophysiological processes and medical conditions

Lectures and self-study.

Course requirements

None.

Assessment

Supervised individual written exam, 6 hours.

The answer can be given in English or another Scandinavian language.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

None.

Grading scale

Grade scale A–F.

Examiners

All answer papers are assessed by two examiners, one of whom must be external.
