Course history

Introduction

The course is based on MAJO4000 Midwifery Care during Childbirth and Starting a Family 1 and MAJO4100 Women's Health - Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, and it consists of clinical training related to the same topics. The student is to further develop his/her theoretical perspectives and knowledge by applying them in reflection and clinical assessments.

The student will develop his/her clinical skills and ability to make clinical assessments relating to a midwife's functions and areas of responsibility and methods used in antenatal care. The student will also be given an introduction to midwives' counselling responsibilities and their functions in youth health clinics and outpatient activities relating to women's reproductive and sexual health. The clinical training runs over a seven-week period in parallel with MAJOPRA 1, which is taught over a twenty-week period. This is adapted to each institution where clinical training takes place.

Required preliminary courses

In order to take the exam in MAJOPRA2, students must have passed the exam in MAJO4100 Women's Health - Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. A student who fails the ordinary exam in MAJO4100 can nevertheless start MAJOPRA2 and take a resit/rescheduled exam while taking MAJOPRA2.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student has advanced knowledge about:

  • the physiological and psychosocial aspects of pregnancy
  • reproductive and sexual health
  • birth control - means, methods and use
  • culturally sensitive care relating to reproductive and sexual health

Skills

The student:

  • is capable of conducting independent and evidence-based antenatal consultations
  • is capable of identifying and taking appropriate action in relation to complications in the pregnant woman and/or her unborn child
  • understands the importance of and contributes to the further development of interdisciplinary cooperation in antenatal care in the best interests of the woman, her partner and the unborn child
  • is capable of applying principles of contraceptive counselling and fitting/removing long-acting reversible contraception (LARC)

Competence

The student is capable of:

  • applying his/her knowledge about counselling and communication within the midwife's areas of expertise and responsibility relating to reproductive and sexual health
  • applying principles for culturally sensitive care in dealings with young people, pregnant women and their partners

Teaching and learning methods

The work and teaching methods used are simulator training in the skills laboratory and user-oriented clinical training in the municipal health service, the specialist health service and/or private midwife practices, studying relevant specialist and research literature individually and in study groups, and individual regularly written logs describing students' progress and focus areas for further learning.

Supervision

As a rule, the student will be supervised by a midwife from the clinical field (clinical supervisor). The clinical supervisor is responsible for facilitating and supervising learning situations in the professional field. The clinical supervisor will carry out a midway assessment with the student no later than three weeks before the end of the course. This conversation will be documented. A supervision meeting can be arranged between the student, clinical supervisor and university supervisor if necessary. It is the students' responsibility to actively seek supervision and be prepared for the final assessment. The university supervisor is responsible for engaging in dialogue with the clinical supervisor about the student's development, and for providing supervision in connection with written coursework requirements.

Course requirements

The following required coursework must be approved before a student can take the exam in the course:

1. Plan for clinical training and assessment: The student prepares a plan for clinical training based on the learning outcomes defined for the course and the available learning situations. The plan for clinical training forms the basis for the assessment of the student's clinical training. The plan is used in the continuous supervision of the student. The purpose of the plan for clinical training is to clarify and describe expected competence and to give the student the opportunity to plan his/her own learning process.

2. An academic assignment from clinical training in the municipal health service. During the work on this assignment, a student can request one (1) supervision session with his/her university supervisor. The purpose of this assignment is for the student to analyse his/her own clinical training experiences and discuss them in light of the midwife's functions in health-promotion and preventive work. The assignment must not exceed 1,500 words.

3. Self-assessment of clinical training in the municipal health service: The student will write a self-assessment taking into account the defined learning outcomes and the assessment of the competence the student has achieved through clinical training in the course. It must not exceed 300 words, and will form part of the basis for the final assessment in the course. The self-assessment is submitted to the midwife/clinical supervisor and in Canvas two days before the final assessment. The self-assessment must be signed by the midwife/clinical supervisor.

4. Documentation of completed clinical learning situations: At least 60-70 prenatal examinations, 5 women with high-risk pregnancies, and 0-5 women who have just given birth and healthy newborns. The consultations must be described by the student and verified by a midwife working in the municipal health service. The purpose of this requirement is to ensure that the student will meet the quantitative requirements for applying for authorisation as a midwife. Students who are assessed as 'not approved' are responsible for securing extra clinical training time to meet the quantitative criteria described above for the course.
