  • Introduction

    This course focuses on human sexual and reproductive health and rights from a life-course perspective. The sexual and reproductive health of women, youth, and young adults is emphasized as part of health promotion efforts to improve quality of life and public health. The course is related to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals that include health and gender equality. Guidance, communication, and health education will be emphasized as the foundation for conducting health promotion and preventive work in the context of sexual and reproductive health. Throughout the course, topics will be discussed from various national, global, historical, and cultural perspectives with a focus on values and human rights.

  • Required preliminary courses

    The student must be admitted to the master's program in midwifery.

  • Learning outcomes

    Upon completion of the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills, and general competence:

    Knowledge

    The student

    • can assess the importance of reproductive health and rights in family planning, prescribing and administering contraception, and counseling on abortion
    • can identify and analyze various types of violence and abuse, negative social control, and genital mutilation including legal rights and obligations in collaboration around victims of violence
    • can recognize knowledge about gender, diversity of sexuality, sexual rights, and sexual health and illness at different stages of life and from a national and international perspective, including factors that affect perceptions of sexual and reproductive health
    • can explain hormonal changes throughout a woman's life, including menstruation and menopause
    • can analyze human rights, inclusion, equality, and non-discrimination, regardless of culture, language, ethnicity, religion, functional level, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, gender expression, age, and family form, which is relevant for the midwifery profession

    Skills

    The student

    • can use knowledge about human rights to promote, protect, and support reproductive and sexual health and rights
    • has an advanced understanding of different users' individual needs and applies knowledge about sexual and reproductive health and rights in an open and inclusive manner

    General Competence

    The student

    • apply knowledge about culture and diversity to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights at the individual and population level.
  • Teaching and learning methods

    The course will use varied, student-active working methods. It is based on blended learning, combining digital learning resources that can be used flexibly, and real-time learning. This includes group assignments and self-study. Digital gatherings are arranged.

  • Course requirements

    The following work requirements must be completed and approved to be eligible for the exam:

    1. a minimum of 80% attendance at compulsory classes
    2. a minimum of 80% attendance at digital seminars, including where students present their work
    3. Digital test, can be retaken until it is approved within a given deadline.
  • Assessment

    Written group project exam with up to 3 students, based on given criteria and developed during the course period. Length: up to 1500 words. The exam can be answered in English or a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish).

    Re-examination: If the exam is failed, the student has the opportunity to submit a revised version once.

  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

    All aids are allowed as long as rules for citation are followed.

    Pass - Fail

  • Examiners

    Each submission is assessed by one examiner.
