Introduction

Language of instruction: Norwegian

This course focuses on the public health nurse’s health promotion and preventive work with children, adolescents and their families/caregivers at the population, group and individual level. This takes place in the municipal health service, at children’s health clinics (0-5 years), in the school health service and youth health centres (6-20 years), as well as in environmental health care, infection control and in the refugee health service. This course is based on key theories and methods in public health science. The academic field's history and current place in society are key aspects. The course is based on health policy guidelines, framework conditions and legislation that are crucial to the public health nurse’s professional practice. Knowledge-based practice (research, empirical data, and user perspectives in equal proportions) are key aspects of the course.

Required preliminary courses

The following required coursework must be approved before the student can take the exam:

Two mandatory assignments:

  • One recorded presentation of between 5 and 10 minutes.
  • A spreadsheet containing results of a research survey including columns for relevant meta-information with at least 7 relevant research papers

Learning outcomes

The following required coursework must be approved before the student can take the exam:

An individual peer review report. This report will document feedback from the student directed to each of the other group members, reflecting the submitter’s insights about the others’ contribution to the project and constructive comments.

Teaching and learning methods

Exam in two parts:

  • Group project report (two to four members in a group, 4000-5000 words) plus a copy of the individual reflection report. The individual reflection will provide the examiners of the final report with insights into how each student contributed and viewed others’ contributions to the group work. This part counts 60% of the final grade.
  • Group presentation for the project (20 minutes for each group presentation followed by a minimum of 10-minute question and answer). Students are graded individually. This part counts 40% of the final grade.

Both parts must be passed in order to pass the course.

The group presentation examination cannot be appealed.

New/postponed exam: In case of failed exam or legal absence, the student may apply for a new or postponed exam. New or postponed exams are offered within a reasonable time span following the regular exam. The student is responsible for registering for a new/postponed exam within the time limits set by OsloMet. The Regulations for new or postponed examinations are available in Regulations relating to studies and examinations at OsloMet.

Assessment

Associate Professor Kyrre Begnum

Permitted exam materials and equipment

The course will guide the student through a series of topics related to research and how research is communicated. The topics range from debate and rhetoric, philosophy of science, writing genres, narrative templates to professional ethics and plagiarism.

Throughout the course, the student will also search for and collect research literature on a topic of their own chosing. This literature will be organized and categorized in such a way that it allows the students to look for patterns and commonalities. The literature will also form the backbone of a popular science essay, which the student works on throughout the course.

The weeks are organized so that the students own search for material is combined with relevant topics and training on how to read, understand and summarize it. Towards the end of the course, more emphasis will be on writing and communication, where the students will look for ways to best communicate their findings. Each student will record a video presentation of their chosen topic in order to test the outline of their essay.

The role of the expert, either as a professional expert or a researcher in academia, will be discussed at several points in the course. In addition, we look at the interplay between the public and the impact technology has on society.

Grading scale

None.

Examiners

Two internal examiners will assess all exam papers. An external supervision sensor assesses the exam assignment and the sensor instructions.
