After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

The student

  • has in-depth knowledge of existential and spiritual needs
  • has advanced knowledge of the experiences, reactions and needs of patients and next of kin in all phases of cancer
  • has advanced knowledge of communication with patients and next of kin in connection with cancer
  • has in-depth knowledge of teaching methods
  • has in-depth knowledge of the importance of patients' networks
  • has in-depth knowledge of how the health and care services for cancer patients are organised
  • has in-depth knowledge of welfare technology and innovation in cancer care
  • has in-depth knowledge of networking and interdisciplinary cooperation
  • has in-depth knowledge of legislation that regulates the rights and obligations of cancer patients during all phases of their treatment
  • has in-depth knowledge of documentation and communication between the different levels of the health service
  • has in-depth knowledge of symptom relief towards the end of life and hospice philosophy

Skills

The student

  • is capable of analysing problems relating to cancer nursing on the basis of the discipline's history, traditions, distinctive nature and place in society
  • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to different sources of information and of using them to structure and formulate cancer nursing argumentation
  • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to existing theories and methods in cancer nursing
  • is capable of analysing relevant academic, professional and research ethics issues in cancer nursing based on relevant discipline, research, experience and patient knowledge
  • is capable of contributing to new ideas and innovation processes in clinical practice.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, group work, seminars and self-study.

Course requirements

In order for a student to be permitted to take the exam, the following assignment must have been approved:

Assignment: The cancer nurse's function and responsibility during different phases of the cancer patient's illness.

  • Written in groups of three students.
  • Maximum length: 3,000 words.
  • Oral presentation in groups.
  • The students receive oral feedback from their fellow students and from the lecturer.

Assessment

A written in-depth assignment, normally written in groups of three students. The assignment shall form a basis for a project description that could be used for a master's thesis.

  • Five weeks are set aside for work on this assignment. 
  • Three hours of supervision is provided per assignment, in addition to a supervision seminar.
  • Maximum length: 5,000 words.

The title of the assignment will be included in the transcript of grades.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All aids are permitted, as long as the rules for source referencing are complied with.

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F.

Examiners

All answer papers are assessed by two examiners. At least 20 % of them will be assessed by an external examiner. The internal examiner then continues grading the rest of the papers together with another internal examiner. The external examiner's assessment shall benefit all the students.
