KDK3010 Art, Mediation and Context Course description

Gaining an understanding of art and dissemination in different settings and contexts is a key element of the course. The course starts with a practical training project (11 weeks) followed by an exam project related to art in public spaces. The course focuses on the acquisition and application of different theoretical perspectives and experimental methods.

Course Projects

Project 1: Practical work training

The internship period focuses on the students ability to exercise and develop their professional competence in working life. During the project period, the student carries out a work placement related to art and/or dissemination (for example in museums, galleries, workshops, companies and/or schools or other institutions within the cultural sector). Emphasis is placed on various forms of written, oral and visual presentation.

Project 2. Exam project Art in public spaces

In the exam project, the student works with art dissemination and art in public spaces. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the acquisition and application of various theoretical perspectives that are relevant in an artistic context. The project aims to strengthen the student's theoretical reflection on the practical implementation of the subject and prepare the student for the upcoming bachelor's thesis.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should have the following overall learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student:

• has knowledge of the subject's field of practice
• has expanded knowledge in art theory
• has expanded knowledge of academic writing
• has knowledge of issues related to art in public spaces

Skills

The student:

• can apply theory and reflect on art and dissemination, both written, oral and visually
• can formulate, structure and implement a project in a given context
• can participate constructively in the practice institution´s activities and function as part of a work team
• can apply investigative and experimental methods in own artistic projects

General competence

The student:

• can work independently and critically
• can plan and carry out varied tasks and projects in line with ethical and copyright considerations
• has knowledge of diversity and multicultural perspectives

Interaction between theoretical understanding and artistic work and reflection is emphasised in the course. Supervision and assessment are an important part of the work process.

Teaching in the course is project and cooperation based, to reflect work in enterprises, workshops, museums, galleries and collections. The work and teaching methods are lectures, seminars, supervision, debates, field studies and exhibitions. The purpose of this is to develop the students’ knowledge, ideas, practical skills, professional understanding and ability to express themselves.

Students on the course are required to attend workshops and to actively participate in tuition. Students are expected to find relevant reading material in addition to the syllabus, and are encouraged to use the learning centres and the resources available there.

In order to be permitted to sit the exam, the following compulsory coursework must have been completed and approved:

Coursework requirements, project 1: Practical work training (individual work)

• Constructive participation in the practical training enterprise/institution’s activities
• Weekly logs from the practical training period (submitted in Canvas)
• A written report on the practical training (approx. 3000 to 3500 words,) describing the student’s experience seen in the context of the art field
• An oral and visual presentation of the student’s experience from the practical training enterprise/institution (based on the written report)

The required coursework is assessed as approved/not approved

Compulsory attendance at teaching activities:

The student cannot be absent for more than 20% of the course.

The exam (project 2) consists of the following two parts:

1. An artistic work with a dissemination text of 200 words (+/-10%)

2. An academic text of 2000 words (+/-10%)

The two parts are assessed together. The exam result can be appealed.

Absence - fail

Students who do not take the exam due to valid absence, or who are awarded an F grade for the bachelor’s thesis, can register for a resit/rescheduled exam.

If the student is taking the resit exam, the bachelor’s thesis that was given an F grade in the ordinary exam must be significantly reworked/improved. If the student is taking the rescheduled exam, the bachelor’s thesis must be submitted pursuant to agreement with the faculty administration.

All aids are permitted as long as rules for citing sources are followed.

Grade scale A-F

The exam will be assessed by two internal examiners. The course may be selected for grading by external examiners.
