Introduction
Required preliminary courses
To interne sensorer. Ekstern sensor brukes jevnlig.
Learning outcomes
The students are expected to learn basic thermodynamic and fluid mechanic concepts, the principles for the application of thermal energy, energy analysis and dimensioning methods for power production processes, combustion engines, gas turbines, refrigeration machines and heat pumps. The student also learns to construct hydraulic systems and select components.
Teaching and learning methods
No requirements over and above the admission requirements.
Course requirements
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student is capable of explaining:
- the properties of pure substances and basics of phase equilibrium
- understands the basic concepts of fluid mechanics
- the law of energy for closed systems
- the law of energy for open systems, including Bernoulli’s equation and continuity
- entropy, changes of state, cycles, reversible and irreversible processes
- circular processes for power production and refrigeration
- Otto and gas turbine processes
- basics of machine systems such as pumps, fans and valves
- basics of Hydraulic systems
- refrigeration and heat pump machines
Skills
The student is:
- is capable of carrying out energy analyses, dimensioning simple thermal processes, choosing a work medium and calculating energy utilization
- analyzing flow in pipes and pipeline networks and calculating energy and pressure loss and finding the operating point of pumps operating in a composite system.
- Drawing hydraulic wiring diagrams, designing and dimensioning certain hydraulic systems.
General competence
The student is:
- capable of applying their knowledge to optimise energy production, rationalise energy consumption and improve the utilisation of renewable energy sources
Assessment
Lectures, exercises and project work.
Permitted exam materials and equipment
The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:
- Nine from twelve individual assignments must be approved
- Two lab assignment
Grading scale
Individual written exam, 3 hours.
The exam result can be appealed.
In the event of a resit or rescheduled exam, an oral examination may be used instead.
Examiners
A handheld calculator that cannot be used for wireless communication or to perform symbolic calculations. If the calculator’s internal memory can store data, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Random checks may be carried out.
