FYB2400 Pathology in Physiotherapy Course description

Introduction
The course provides students with an introduction to key pathological processes that affect bodily functions and movement, with particular emphasis on conditions commonly encountered by physiotherapists in clinical practice. It covers pathological processes and metabolic disorders within the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and the respiratory system, including conditions that require referral for further assessment. The course also addresses the role of health technology in selected examinations.

The student can only remain with one failed course from the first year of study.

Learning outcomes
After completion the course, the students should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The students can
- describe the main pathological processes and metabolic conditions that can affect the musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems
- explain how pathological processes and metabolic states can affect function and movement, as well as be regulated by means of basic drug treatment
- recognise risk factors for serious illness and assess the need for further referrals
- account for health technology used in the investigation of disease mechanisms and pathological processes
Skills
The students can
- apply precise professional terminology to describe disease mechanisms and pathological processes.
General competence
The students can
- reflect on the relationship between pathological processes, metabolic states and findings from the functional examination

Teaching and learning methods
The work and teaching methods in the course include physical and digital lectures, seminars with group work and self-study.

Course requirements
The following must have been approved in order for the student to take the exam:
- Minimum of 80 % attendance in teaching activities marked as "compulsory attendance" in the schedule

Assessment
Supervised individual written exam (multiple choice),up to 2 hours.

Permitted exam materials and equipment
No aids permitted.

Grading scale
Grade scale A-F.

Examiners
All answers are reviewed by one examiner. An external examiner is regularly involved in the evaluation of assignment sets and assessment criteria, at a minimum for every third ordinary examination.

Overlapping courses
2,5 credits overlap with FYB2000 Physiotherapy for Health Conditions I and 2.5 credits overlap with FYB2200 Physiotherapy for Health Conditions II.
