FARMAPRA10 Pre-registration Training Course description

Through practical training at a pharmacy, the students will gradually develop a basis for exercising pharmaceutical discretion and for mastering the professional role of pharmacist with a bachelor's degree.

The students will use their knowledge of the discipline to carry out relevant pharmaceutical tasks at the pharmacy. They will acquire new knowledge, new skills and develop a professional ethical attitude that can only be learnt through practical work. The purpose of practical training at a pharmacy is to give the students an opportunity to train in a realistic work situation for the purpose of preparing the students as best as possible to practise their profession in a responsible and independent manner.

Listed below are the subjects covered by the course, with credits specified:

Pharmacy pharmaceutics, 20 credits

Passed the second year of the programme.

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

• has broad knowledge of the pharmacist's role in the key areas of the pharmacy
• has broad knowledge of pharmaceuticals administration at a pharmacy
• has insight into how a pharmacy operates, its quality control systems and internal control
• has broad knowledge of human and veterinary medicine  

Skills

The student

• is capable of making independent assessments and dispensing pharmaceuticals in accordance with prescriptions or requisitions and in accordance with laws and regulations 
• masters guidance and professional advice that contributes to responsible and medically correct use of pharmaceuticals
• is capable of identifying and solving problems related to pharmaceuticals
• is capable of engaging in dialogue with and advising the pharmacy users on self-medication and inform them about the impact of lifestyle factors on health
• is capable of carrying out pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy
• is capable of assessing when self-care is sufficient and when a patient should be referred to other health personnel
• is capable of using and following up internal control systems, including the pharmacy's procedures and non-conformity system
• is capable of working in an evidence-based manner and documenting and communicating his/her own professional knowledge to all users of the pharmacy
• is capable of critically reflecting on his/her own work and profession and the role of pharmacists in society

General competence

The student 

• can act in manner that demonstrates empathy, respect and equality, which promotes autonomy and co-determination for all users of the pharmacy
• is capable of identifying, reflecting on and dealing with ethical dilemmas in the pharmacy's day-to-day activities
• masters intercultural communication
• is capable of interprofessional cooperation in the patient's best interest

• all compulsory assignments related to the practical training, as set out in the practical training compendium

Practical training: The midway and final assessments are made by the practical training supervisor and the contact lecturer at OsloMet. The final decision on whether the course is passed or not is made by the university.
