Course history

Introduction

The course deals with electrical circuits. Important topics are linear circuits and how simple circuits can be constructed based on specifications, direct current and alternating current, and frequency selective circuits.

Required preliminary courses

No requirements over and above the admission requirements.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student:

  • has good knowledge of the physical laws that apply to electrical circuits
  • has basic knowledge on operational amplifiers
  • has good knowledge of DC and AC circuits
  • has good knowledge of methods for analyzing DC and stationary AC circuits
  • knows how to analysing transient states in RL and RC circuits
  • ha good  knowledge of resistive circuits using operational amplifiers
  • ha basic knowledge of frequency selective circuits

Skills

The student is capable of:

  • doing calculations on dc and ac circuits
  • doing calculations in circuits employing operational amplifiers
  • developing and using transfer functions for frequency selective circuits of the first order
  • using instruments such as a voltmeter, ammeter and oscilloscope
  • designing circuits based on diagrams and troubleshooting hardware if necessary
  • explaining the function(s) of a circuit
  • using manufacturer manuals and data sheets

General competence

The student is capable of:

  • analysing a problem and specifying a solution method
  • discussing and justifying own choices and priorities in relation to electric circuits
  • explaining the historical development of the field of electricity

Teaching and learning methods

Theory lectures, laboratory work.

Course requirements

The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:

  • Four lab exercises with presence

Report must be approved at the end of each excersise before leaving the laboratory.

Assessment

Individual digital home-exam, 3 hours.

The exam result can be appealed.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All handwritten and printed support material is allowed.

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F.

Examiners

One internal examiners. External examiners are used regularly.
