Course history
  • Introduction

This course provides basic knowledge and hands-on skills in industrial information and communication technologies related to industrial automation systems. This includes technologies for the ethernet, field communication network, and basic firewall.

    Language of Instruction: Norwegian

  • Recommended preliminary courses

Preferably basic skills in programming. MEK1300 Introduction to Python Programming and MEK3100 Advanced Python Programming for Engineers.

  • Required preliminary courses

No requirements over and above the admission requirements.

  • Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

    Knowledge

    The student can:

    • describe the principles of industrial Ethernet, fieldbus systems and real‑time communication protocols
    • describe the main concepts of virtual machines, local area network components and architectures
    • explain the concepts of security for industrial networks, including firewalls, threat types, and segmentation
    • outline the principles of databases for automation systems and interaction with industrial communication networks
    • explain the concepts of cloud, edge computing, and IIoT in industrial data exchange
    • discuss emerging communication technologies in industrial automation.

    Skill

    The student can:

    • set up virtual machines and configure small computer networks
    • perform basic configuration of network components, and firewalls
    • design and configure simple relational databases for industrial data
    • configure fieldbus communication between a sensor network utilizing relevant protocols.
    • analyze industrial network traffic and simulate networks

    General competence

    The student has:

    • practical skills in building a small local area network with a database, connect to fieldbus network and protect it from threats coming through the communication network
    • an overall understanding of how communication takes place in various industrial applications and how to protect from external threats
  • Teaching and learning methods

The teaching consists of lectures, exercises and laboratory work.

  • Course requirements

The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:

    • 4 laboratory protocols of 4-6 pages, individually or in a group of 2 students.
  • Assessment

The assessment will be based on a semester project in groups of 2 students. The exam in two parts consists of:

    1) Group project report (3000-5000 words). The project report counts 80% of the final grade.

    2) Group project presentation (10 minutes). The oral examination counts 20% of the final grade

Both exams must be passed in order to pass the course. The oral examination cannot be appealed.

    New/postponed exam

In case of failed exam or legal absence, the student may apply for a new or postponed exam. New or postponed exams are offered within a reasonable time span following the regular exam. The student is responsible for applying for a new/postponed exam within the time limits set by OsloMet. The Regulations for new or postponed examinations are available in Regulations relating to studies and examinations at OsloMet.

In the event of a resit or rescheduled exam, an oral examination may be used instead. In case an oral exam is used, the examination result cannot be appealed.

  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

    Del 1: All

    Del 2: None

  • Grading scale

    Grade scale A-F.
