Introduction
The student should acquire basic knowledge in network technology. This includes both the Internet and industrial communication systems.
Required preliminary courses
No requirements over and above the admission requirements.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student has basic knowledge and understanding of:
- ethernet based communication TCP/IP
- wireless communication systems, mobile communication systems
- fieldbus Technologies: HART, WirelessHART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION-feltbuss, MODBUS, EtherNet/IP
- industrial communication standards such as OPC and OPC UA
- systems for data Collection, Processing and saving, such as SCADA and cloud based service
- industrial internet of things
- cyber security
Skill
The student is capable of:
- setting up networks of computers
- analyzing communications using web analyzers
General competence
The student has:
- practical skills in setting up a network and use of network components
- a general understanding of how communication takes place and of industrial processes in a project-related and operations-technical perspective
Teaching and learning methods
The teaching consists of lectures, exercises and laboratory work.
Course requirements
The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:
- 3 written assignments in groups of 2-4 students. The report length is 10 pages, about 10 hours per student per assignment.
Assessment
Exam form: Individual written exam, 3 hours
The exam result can be appealed.
Permitted exam materials and equipment
A handheld calculator that cannot be used for wireless communication or to perform symbolic calculations. If the calculator’s internal memory can store data, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Random checks may be carried out.
Grading scale
Grade scale A-F.
Examiners
One internal examiners. External examiners are used regularly.
