Introduction
General introduction to Railway Engineering.
Elective courses are set up under precondition that there are enough students in the course.

The course builds on the course BYPE1600 Mechanics

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student:
- is familiar with superstructures and substructures, track geometry, track components, points, welded tracks, and track-train interaction
Skills
The student:
- is capable of designing a track geometry plan
- is capable of assisting in the planning and prioritisation of maintenance of a section of track
- understands how the various railway components interact and affect each other
General competence
The student:
- understands the main principles of design, construction and maintenance of railway tracks
- has a general understanding of the railways as a system
Teaching and learning methods
Lectures, exercises and excursions.
Course requirements
The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:
- 2 practical exercises. Both exercises are performed individually. One of the exercises is based on measurements in fields that are performed in groups. The scope of work for each of the exercises corresponds to the work of the exam (3 hours).
Assessment
Individual written exam, 3 hours
The result of the exam can be appealed.
A resit or rescheduled exam may take the form of an oral exam. The exam results cannot be appealed.
Permitted exam materials and equipment
A handheld calculator that cannot be used for wireless communication or to perform symbolic calculations. If the calculator’s internal memory can store data, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Random checks may be carried out. Formula sheet.

Grade scale A-F.
