Introduction
The subject includes design of beams, columns and composite bearing elements of timber and steel in ultimate limit state, serviceability limit state and accidental limit state. The item includes welding joints, fasteners as bolts, nails, screws and timber connectors. The course will provide an understanding of the load effects, material properties and use of information given in other standards.Tests of rupture and shear strength on simple wooden samples. The subject is based on BYPE1600 Mechanics and BYGG1100 Building Materials and Building Technology.
Required preliminary courses
No requirements over and above the admission requirements.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student:
- is familiar with the common design models for structural elements and simple and complex structures of steel and wood
- is familiar with design methods described in Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 5
Skills
The student is capable of:
- using mechanics of materials and dimensioning methods to dimension load-bearing structural elements and joints in structures made of varying combinations of wood and steel
General competence
The student:
- Has a general understanding of the theoretical basis of Eurocode 3 and 5.
Teaching and learning methods
Lectures and supervised exercise assignments.
Course requirements
The course builds and expands on the course SYKK/SYKPPRA20. In this course, the students will practice independence in planning, carrying out and assessing nursing in acute and chronically ill patients. The prevention of complications and early detection of deterioration in the patients’ condition are key elements. Quality development, patient safety and ethics are also part of the course.
Assessment
Individual written exam under supervision, 3 hours
The result of the exam can be appealed.
Any resit or rescheduled exam may take the form of an oral exam. If oral exams are used for resits and rescheduled exams, the exam results cannot be appealed.
Permitted exam materials and equipment
Allowed Equipment and documents: All printed and written documents.A handheld calculator that cannot be used for wireless communication or to perform symbolic calculations. If the calculator's internal memory can store data, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Inspection can be made. Pre-approved dictionary. Equipments for writing and drawing. There are no attachments to the exam, Candidates must bring all necessary standards, tables etc. for the exam.
Grading scale
Practical training: carried out either in the practical training field in mental health and intoxication or in home-based services (7 weeks).
Examiners
Practical training has requirements for attendance, self-presentation for the start of the practice and self-assessment for the mid- and final assessment, blood test course and group assignment , and academic question is chosen with relevance to the practical training establishment and of significance to patient safety. Groups of 3-4 students.

Assessment in practice
The assessment takes its point of departure in given criteria based on learning outcomes for the course, assessment criteria, the continuous assessment, the suitability assessment and compulsory activities carried throughout the practical training. Students’ practical training can only be assessed if their attendance is sufficiently high (90%). For more information, see the general part of the programme description about the assessment of practical training.
If the student has failed the practical training, the whole practical training course must be retaken. This includes associated requirements.
