Introduction
The subject includes design of beams, columns and composite bearing elements of timber and steel in ultimate limit state, serviceability limit state and accidental limit state. The item includes welding joints, fasteners as bolts, nails, screws and timber connectors. The course will provide an understanding of the load effects, material properties and use of information given in other standards.Tests of rupture and shear strength on simple wooden samples. The course includes the use of Autodesk Robot structural analyses program. The subject is based on BYPE1100 Physics and Mechanics and BYTS2100 Building Materials and Concrete Design.

Required preliminary courses
After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student is familiar with:
- matrix statics and the finite element method
- second order deflection theory
- plastic theory
Skills
The student is capable of:
- conducting manual calculations using matrix statics
- conducting rupture strength calculations for beams and frames based on plastic flow
- using theory and FEM software to design specific structures, such as trusses, arches, frames, girder lattices etc., that will be exposed to different loads (including temperature loads)
General competence
The student:
- is capable of explaining the principles of element analysis
- is capable of critically assessing the results when comparing theoretical and numerical calculations
- understands the difference between elastic and plastic capacity
-
