Course history

Introduction

The Bachelor's Thesis is the final course in the engineering education. It is a self-chosen assignment that is carried out by students in a group that usually consists of 3 or 4 students. The course provides students with training in the independent implementation of a larger work, the application of relevant methodological tools and should be structured so that students have the opportunity to use knowledge and skills from several areas.

It is strongly recommended to write the BSc thesis in collaboration with an industrial partner based on an industrial project. The BSc thesis should be rooted in real engineering issues relevant to the field of study in question.

Recommended preliminary courses

The BSc thesis builds on knowledge from all five previous semesters.

Required preliminary courses

The student must be registered in the 3rd year of study and have passed a minimum of 100 credits from the 1st and 2nd year of study as of October 1st in order to be registered for the BSc thesis.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student shows:

  • engineering insight with a holistic perspective
  • good application of old and new knowledge to new knowledge and practical solutions
  • skills to review scientific literature and understand ongoing research and development within the topic

Skills

The student can:

  • master suitable methods and tools
  • communicate findings and conclusions clearly, both in writing and orally
  • carry out an engineering task in an independent and systematic manner
  • define the problem, scope and project goals and plan progress
  • describe the task, analyze results and discuss to reach a conclusion

General competence

The student has:

  • competence to quality assure the results and critically analyze the results
  • competence to work in an independent, creative and innovative way
  • competence to assess technological solutions in terms of environment, society and economy
  • competence to work in a team when it comes to planning and carrying out tasks

Teaching and learning methods

Project work in groups culminates in a BSc thesis, poster and oral presentation. It is strongly recommended to write the BSc thesis in collaboration with an industrial partner based on an industrial project, and it is left to the students to find external industrial contacts themselves. The problem is formulated in collaboration with an external industrial contact. A supervisor belonging to the study program is appointed.

The groups consist of 3 or 4 students. Exceptionally, when special reasons apply (i.e., illness, top sports), the BSc thesis can, upon application, be completed by a single student. Upon request, other group sizes may also be considered, but size of 3 or 4 students is the preferred one. It is up to the students to create student groups themselves. A supervisor belonging to the study program is appointed for each group. Any external collaborator will normally also contribute with supervision and follow-up.

Course requirements

There must be constant dialogue between the student group, supervisor and industry partner. This can be take place, for example, by arranging regular meetings and/or effective use of emails.

Assessment

Assessment is based on the BSc thesis, poster and oral presentation.

1) Thesis counts 70%.

2) Poster and oral presentation count 30%.

Exam results in part 1) can be appealed. Exam results in part 2) cannot be appealed.

Both exam parts must be assessed at grade E or better for the student to pass the course.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All aids are allowed. It is necessary that the rules for citing sources are followed in the BSc thesis.

Grading scale

Graded scale A-F.

Examiners

Two internal examiners. External examiners are used regularly.
