Introduction

The course covers basic statics and strength of materials, providing a knowledge base for all construction courses in the program. The content includes:

  • Force vectors and equilibrium of solids
  • Diagrams for bending moments, shear forces and axial forces
  • Linear beam theory
  • Stress distributions
  • Deformation calculations

Required preliminary courses

No requirements over and above the admission requirements.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student:

  • has in-depth knowledge of the principles concerning forces and equilibrium
  • has in-depth knowledge about "strength of materials", including Hookes law, beam theory and deformation and stress calculations
  • has in-depth knowledge of common construction elements, including beams, columns and axial rods (trusses)

Skills

The student is capable of:

  • calculating the forces in statically determinate structures
  • calculating and sketching moment, shear force and axial force diagrams for beams and rods
  • performing stress and strain calculations due to moments and axial force
  • performing deformation calculations for simple statically determinate structures through application of linear beam theory

General competence

The student is capable of:

  • performing necessary static calculations as basis for design of structures

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures and supervision of assigned exercises. The course also includes practical exercises in classroom.

Course requirements

The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can sit the exam:

  • 6 of 11 individual calculation exercises
  • 1 group assignment from practical exercises

Assessment

Individual written 3 hours exam under supervision.

The result of the exam can be appealed.

A resit or rescheduled exam may take the form of an oral exam. If oral exams are used for resits or rescheduled exams, the exam results cannot be appealed.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

Writing- and drawing material and handheld calculator that cannot be used for wireless communication. If the calculator’s internal memory can store data, the memory must be deleted before the exam. Random checks may be carried out.

Grading scale

Graded scale A-F.

Examiners

One internal examiner. External examiners are used regularly.
