  • Introduction

    In this course, the students will write an individual thesis that addresses child welfare and social pedagogy work with children and young people and their families living in vulnerable life situations. 

    The bachelor's thesis is an independent piece of academic work produced by the student. Each student formulates a research question of relevance to the work of a child welfare officer. The goal is to put issues relevant to professional practice into a theoretical and practical perspective and demonstrate analytical competence and ethical reflection. The students should also show that they master the formal and methodology requirements for academic writing of such a scope.

    In the work on the thesis, the student is expected to use relevant subject matter from the programme and obtain new knowledge from specialist literature and other relevant sources.

  • Required preliminary courses

    The student must have completed and passed the second year of the Bachelor Programme in Child Care and Welfare and completed and passed the practical training in the third year.

    · has knowledge of the importance of theory of science in scientific work

    · has broad knowledge of research ethics, fundamental social science research methods and their possibilities and limitations

    · has knowledge of different epistemological positions, new ideas and innovation processes of relevance to the selected topic and research question for the bachelor’s thesis

    · has in-depth multidisciplinary knowledge of a topic of their own choosing of relevance to child welfare officers’ area of expertise

    The student

    · can reflect on power structures, professionalism and their own role as a professional in the child welfare system

    · can develop research questions of relevance to the field of practice and apply new professional knowledge in a methodical and scientific manner

    · can find, assess and refer to research and practice-based knowledge in the field of child welfare in a relevant manner that sheds light on the research question

    · can conduct advanced literature searches in various databases and apply knowledge of child welfare and social pedagogy in major written works

  • Course requirements

    Undervisningen gjennomføres i en veksling mellom forelesninger, diskusjoner, gruppearbeid, studentpresentasjoner og seminarer o.l. Det forventes at studentene er aktive i egne læringsprosesser mellom samlingene, og prøver ut verktøy, modeller og redskaper introdusert i samlingene.

  • Assessment

    Individual bachelor's thesis.

    The assignment must total 18-20 pages. The cover page, table of contents and reference list come in addition to this. All the pages, apart from the cover page, must be numbered and state the candidate number. The cover page must also state necessary information about which exam the paper concerns, and carry the exam code.

    Font and font size: Calibri 12-point. Line spacing 1.5. The approved citation style APA for assignments must be complied with.

    A selection of self-chosen readings, which comprises of 500 pages must be attached in the assignment.

    Students who fail the exam or who were absent from the ordinary exam for a valid reason can take a resit/rescheduled exam. Students can submit a reworked version of the thesis once, and can receive one hour of additional individual supervision in connection with improving the thesis. Students must contact the person responsible for the course to organise a supervision session. No supervision will be given in July.

    Students who fail twice must submit a new bachelor’s thesis based on a new research question at the next exam. It is the students’ responsibility to contact the person responsible for the course to schedule three supervision sessions well before the start of the course.

  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

    All aids are permitted, as long as the rules for source referencing are complied with.

    Eksamen vurderes av to interne sensorer. Tilsynssensorer er oppnevnt for å vurdere helheten i programmet og eksamen i det enkelte emnet.
