Course history

Introduction

This course provides an introduction to key concepts and theories in ethics and theory of science. The teaching on ethics is about views on humanity, power management and knowledge and demonstration of professional judgement in child care and welfare work.  The theory of science component addresses the significance of this knowledge in professional child welfare work. The relationship between the knowledge of professionals and refinement in the subject area when interacting with users and partners forms a key part of the course.

Knowledge 

The student 

·         has knowledge of key ethical traditions and concepts of relevance to child protection work, including professional ethics. 

·         has knowledge of fundamental positions and concepts in philosophy of science of relevance to child protection work.   

·         has knowledge views on humanity and values relevant to ethics, philosophy of science or child protection work.

  • Has knowledge of conceptions of justice relevant to child protection work, including equal services, inclusion and non-discrimination.   

  

Skills 

The student 

·         can explain different ethical concepts and traditions 

·         can explain different views in philosophy of science  

·         has insight into, can reflect on and discuss ethical issues in the various areas of the child welfare service's work  

·         can develop an understanding of and insight into their own professional refinement in interactions with children, young people and their parents/guardians 

·         can reflect on the relationship between research knowledge, experience-based knowledge and knowledge acquired from children, young people and their parents/guardians as the basis for evidence-based practice

The student 

·         understands the relationship between ethics, philosophy of science and professional practice in the child welfare service  

·         has insight into and can reflect on the importance of ethics and knowledge in the field of child care and child welfare 

·         has insight into the significance of and challenges associated with discretion in professional work.  

Teaching and learning methods

The course is taught through lectures, self-study, group work and other teaching methods as needed. 

Course requirements

No coursework requirements/compulsory activities.

Assessment

An individual written home exam over 7 days hours with a scope of 8 - 10 pages.  Font and font size: Calibri 12-point. Line spacing 1.5. The approved citation style APA for assignments must be complied with.

Candidates who fail or who were absent from the ordinary exam for a valid reason can take a resit/rescheduled exam

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All aids are permitted, as long as the rules for source referencing are complied with.

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F. 

Examiners

All exam papers are assessed by one internal and one external examiner.
