Course history

Introduction

The course provides an introduction to medical laboratory science R&D work. The goal of the bachelor's assignment is to give the students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a topic of their own choice that is relevant to medical laboratory sciences. Scientific methods are a recurring topic during the work on the assignment. The students are expected to develop an understanding of the importance of updating and developing medical laboratory science practice.

The course consists of the following subject areas, specified below as the number of credits:

  • Philosophy of science and research methods 2
  • Medical laboratory sciences subjects 13
  • Total 15

Required preliminary courses

Passed the first and second years of the programme.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge of research and development work in an area of medical laboratory sciences
  • is familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the research methods applied in his/her own project
  • is familiar with research ethics as an aspect of his/her own project
  • has knowledge of philosophy of science and research methodology

Skills

The student

  • is capable of obtaining, critically assessing and integrating relevant subject matter in his/her own project work
  • is capable of disseminating and reflecting on his/her own project verbally and in writing
  • is capable of applying relevant scientific methods

General competence

The student

  • is capable of planning, carrying out and disseminating a project in the field in binding cooperation with others
  • demonstrates independent reflection in areas of medical laboratory sciences, particularly in relation to interpreting and evaluating the results achieved during work on the assignment

Teaching and learning methods

The bachelor's assignment is normally carried out as supervised project work in groups of three to four students. The teaching methods used are lectures and seminars. The project will be presented orally to the lecturer(s), supervisor and fellow students prior to submission of the assignment. The students should themselves actively seek assignment proposals from the field of practice and from lecturers.

Course requirements

The following required coursework must be approved before the student can take the exam:

  • a minimum attendance of 80% at seminars
  • oral presentation of the bachelor's project in groups of three to four students, up to 30 minutes

Assessment

After completing the course, students will acquired the learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student has

  • in-depth knowledge of theory and practice in strategic corporate finance
  • detailed knowledge and understanding of enterprise value and how it can be influenced by the enterprise¿s investments, finances and decisions to declare dividend
  • insight into financial markets, their influence on financial decisions and internal and external investment strategies

Skills

The student is capable of

  • analysing complex financial decisions
  • identifying incentives capable of encouraging managers to make decisions that are in line with the best interests of the owners

Permitted exam materials and equipment

The students require a lot of practice in order to develop their analytical abilities. The subject matter is taught through ordinary lectures, guest lectures, group work and discussions relating to case exercises.

Grading scale

In order to be able to register for the exam, the student must have the following approved work requirements:

A written assignment (approx. 10 pages). Problem set may be submitted individually or in groups of up to four students. If the assignment is not approved, the student will be given one opportunity to submit an improved version. The lecturer will inform students of deadlines for submission.

Examiners

Written school exam (4 hours).
