BIB1500 Introduction to library and information science Course description

I emnet presenteres og diskuteres bibliotek- og informasjonsvitenskap som selvstendig fagområde. Emnet gir en introduksjon til de faglige og vitenskapelige tradisjonene bibliotek- og informasjonsvitenskapen springer ut av, og presenterer sentrale begreper, faglige diskusjonstema og viktige utfordringer i samtid og framtid. Emnet gir en innføring i bibliotekarens arbeidsområder, samt bibliotekenes historie og mandat.

The course will use varied, student-active work methods. The teaching will mainly be digital, in addition to blended learning with seminars on campus during the course.

Work and teaching methods include digital lectures, digital group assignments, in-depth and reflection assignments at seminars on relevant topics, and self-study. The students will give oral presentations at the seminars, and receive oral feedback from fellow students on their group work and oral feedback from the lecturer.

Studenten skal etter å ha fullført emnet ha følgende totale læringsutbytte definert i kunnskap, ferdigheter og generell kompetanse:

• kunnskap om bibliotekarens rolle og arbeidsområder
• grunnleggende kunnskap om bibliotekenes historiske utvikling
• sentrale utviklingstrekk og utfordringer på det bibliotek- og informasjonsfaglige feltet

Ferdigheter

• anvende faglige begreper i vurdering av bibliotekfaglige problemstillinger
• delta i en faglig diskusjon om bibliotek- og informasjonsfaglige tema

Generell kompetanse

• en akademisk arbeidsmåte
• erfaring med å delta i gruppearbeid
• reflektere kritisk over faglig litteratur og diskusjoner som angår profesjon og praksis

Individual home examination over four days. Scope: up to 2,500 words.

If the course is taught in English, students can also choose to write/conduct the examination in a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish).

All aids are permitted, as long as the rules for source referencing are complied with.

Grade scale A-F.

All examination papers are assessed by two examiners. A minimum of 20% of the examination papers will be assessed by an external examiner. The external examiner’s assessment should benefit all students.
