Course history

Introduction

Practical training is taken at neonatal intensive care units, paediatric intensive care units, paediatric surgery/intermediate care units, postoperative units and/or paediatric medical/intermediate care units.

The students¿ main focus will remain on the needs of acutely and/or critically ill children in a complex, unpredictable and rapidly changing situation in a high-tech environment. Students are expected to integrate their medical knowledge and their understanding of the experiences, problems and needs of children and their caregivers in the situation. In addition, they are expected to develop their skills in preventing complications, reducing stress and alleviating suffering, pain and discomfort. The educational function of the paediatric nurse and documentation will also be dealt with. The students are expected to demonstrate clear progress, take responsibility and, to an increasing extent, demonstrate the ability to make independent assessments in paediatric nursing practice.

Required preliminary courses

Students must have passed BARNPRA10/MPBARNPRA10 Clinical Studies in Paediatric Nursing, Level 1 in order to start this course.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge:The student

  • has in-depth knowledge about children's physical, mental and social development
  • has in-depth knowledge about children's fundamental needs and how complications and developmental damage can be prevented
  • has in-depth knowledge of diseases in children, their treatment and any related complications
  • has in-depth knowledge of how children express symptoms, pain and anxiety
  • has in-depth knowledge about maintaining and restoring vital functions if they are threatened
  • has in-depth knowledge about children's experiences, reactions and needs in connection with acute, critical or chronic illness, in a multicultural perspective
  • has in-depth knowledge about the experiences, reactions and needs of parents and siblings when a child is acutely, critically or chronically ill, in a multicultural perspective
  • is familiar with action alternatives in cases of suspicion of neglect or abuse of children

Skills:

The student

  • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to theories and methods in paediatric nursing
  • is capable of observing, assessing and identifying a child¿s general and special needs, resources and problems
  • is capable of preventing complications, infections, traumatic experiences and developmental damage caused by examinations, treatment and hospital stays
  • is capable of practising paediatric nursing with respect for children¿s autonomy, integrity and dignity
  • is capable of communicating and interacting in relation to a child¿s age and developmental stage, the experiences of the child and his/her caregivers/siblings and the situation
  • is capable of using knowledge about how children express symptoms, pain and anxiety to map, assess, prevent, treat and relieve children's pain and discomfort
  • is capable, with some supervision, of work on practical and theoretical problem-solving relating to the paediatric nurse¿s functions and areas of responsibility
  • is capable of planning and implementing measures in order of priority on the basis of the needs and resources of children and their parents
  • is capable of assessing acute situations and implementing measures to maintain/restore vital functions
  • is capable of looking after the healthy aspects of the child, promoting coping, and maintaining hope, quality of life and meaning

Competence:The student

  • is capable, with some supervision, of analysing relevant ethical issues in paediatric nursing based on relevant discipline knowledge, research, experience and patient knowledge
  • is capable, with some supervision, of critical reflection when making choices and of practising paediatric nursing in accordance with ethical principles and healthcare legislation
  • is capable of participating actively in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation on patient treatment in accordance with his/her own competence and applicable ethical principles and healthcare legislation
  • is capable of benefitting from supervision and demonstrating the ability to reflect on his/her own actions

The following coursework requirements must be met before a student can receive an assessment for the course:

  • The student must submit at least one written assessment per month.

Assessment

Barnesykepleier har et selvstendig ansvar for egen yrkesutøvelse i tillegg til delegerte medisinske oppgaver og samarbeider nært med barneleger og øvrige deltakere i helseteamet. For å kunne utføre delegerte medisinske oppgaver og iverksette barnesykepleietiltak må studenten tilegne seg spesialisert kunnskap om patofysiologi, svikt i vitale funksjoner og intensivbehandling ved ulike medisinske og kirurgiske tilstander hos barn, samt relevant kunnskap om anestesi knyttet til dette. Denne kunnskapen er nødvendig for å kunne observere og tolke sykdomstegn hos barn, iverksette sykepleietiltak og delta i, gjennomføre og overvåke avansert medisinsk behandling av barn.

Grading scale

ABIO6000/MAABI4000, Medisinsk og naturvitenskapelig kunnskap 10 ECTS., must have been approved in order for a student to be permitted to take the exam for this course.

  • har inngående kunnskap om hvordan barnemedisinske sykdomstilstander starter, utvikles, observeres og behandles
  • har inngående kunnskap i nyfødtmedisin (neonatologi), pediatri, barnekirurgi, nevrokirurgi og intensivmedisinsk behandling av barn
  • har inngående kunnskap om medikamentell behandling av barn
  • har kunnskap om anestesiformer og ettervirkninger
  • har inngående kunnskap om smerte- og kvalmebehandling av barn
  • har inngående kunnskap om faktorer og sykdom som påvirker barns psykiske helse
  • har inngående kunnskap om prinsipper for administrering av medisinsk utstyr som brukes i barnekirurgisk, nyfødtmedisinsk, barnemedisinsk og intensivmedisinsk behandling av barn

Ferdigheter

Studenten

  • kan analysere og forholde seg kritisk til teori og metoder innenfor barnemedisin, barnekirurgi, nevrokirurgi, anestesiologi og medikamentell behandling av barn
  • kan arbeide selvstendig med teoretisk problemløsing relatert til forordnet medisinsk behandling av barn, delegert av lege
  • kan analysere og forholde seg kritisk til kunnskap om patofysiologi og svikt i vitale funksjoner som grunnlag for å observere og tolke sykdomstegn hos barn
