Programme description
  • Introduction

    The Final Bachelor Project is about demonstrating skills and understanding in the design field through defining, developing and delivering an innovative design project.The project is expected to result from extensive research and experimentation and be contextualised/positioned in relation to intended users, usage areas, competitors and the commercial marketplace.

    Candidates are expected to demonstrate an awareness of sustainability/environmental issues related to their work.

    Language of Instruction: Norwegian

  • Required preliminary courses

    Successfully completed level one of the programme, and at least 130ECTS. (Or equivalent).

  • Learning outcomes

    Upon completion of the module, the student is expected to have the following learning outcomes defined in knowledge, skills, and competence:

    Knowledge

    The student:

    • has in-depth knowledge of design and development processes
    • has good knowledge of sustainability and resource use related to the field of design
    • can apply design methodology in a societal context
    • is familiar with relevant research and development work

    Skills

    The student:

    • can apply appropriate work methods and develop solutions adapted to specific contexts
    • can work independently and reflect critically on their own professional practice
    • can develop design solutions that take into account sustainability and resource use
    • can apply creativity and innovation in their projects

    General Competence

    The student:

    • can contextualize their work as a designer and contribute positively to a societal and sustainability perspective through projects
    • can communicate ethical challenges that affect the field, especially within sustainability
    • has insight into copyright issues related to the field.
  • Content

    Through the Final Major Project candidates shall conduct, document and present a design project where they take responsibility for their own choices and apply the competency they are expected to have developed during the course of the entire programme. Candidates are expected to further develop their abilities through this work, while showing that they've mastered the design process and evidencing abilities as product designers.

  • Teaching and learning methods

    The Final Major Project can be undertaken as a group project or individually.

    This is conducted through independent study, workshops, tutorials and milestone meetings.

  • Course requirements

    The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can take the exam:

    • Detailed project description

    • Minimum 80% attendance in lectures, workshops, milestone meetings defined by the course responsible.

    • Reflective note

    • Individual or group delivery of materials for digital catalogue / presentation of project in public context

  • Assessment

    Bachelor’s Thesis with Adjusting Oral Examination (individual or in groups of 2 - 4 students):

    The bachelor’s thesis consists of an portfolio with the following components:

    • Product
    • Documentation of the developed product
    • Documentation of the design process, including a summary of the project description
    • Poster

    A preliminary grade is awarded for the portfolio as a whole. Candidates who are assessed as with the grade F (fail) may not proceed to the oral presentation.

    Adjusting Oral Examination

    An oral presentation of the portfolio is given to the examiners (and may be open to supervisors, students, and invited guests). After the oral presentation, the final grade may be adjusted up or down by up to one grade.

    The grade for the bachelor’s thesis may be appealed. In the event of an appeal, the written work will be reassessed by an appeals committee. If the appeals assessment results in a change of grade for the written component, the student must also complete a new adjusting oral examination

  • Permitted exam materials and equipment

    All supporting aids permitted, subject to references adhering to rules for citation

  • Grading scale

    Grade scale A-F.

  • Examiners

    The project is assessed by one internal and one external examiner.
