Course history

Introduction

Design is a human-based approach to creating something new where the whole and the parts interplay to provide value for the user. In this course, we will look at the user and the user situation and translate it into functions as a key element of the user experience.

Required preliminary courses

Students must have passed the courses BAPD1100, BAPD1020 and BAPD1300 or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • is familiar with the concepts of ergonomics at the physical and psychological individual level, and universal design
  • is familiar with theories and principles of sustainable design

The student is familiar with design methodology, including

  • user-centred product design
  • divergent and convergent thinking
  • methods of analysing needs and problem areas related to the use of products and systems, including the concept of user insight
  • using different model types through the design process (principle, function and mock-up prototypes)

Skills

The student

  • is capable of planning and carrying out a design process
  • is capable of further developing skills in model building and idea realisation
  • is familiar with 3D modelling, documentation and presentation, and the use of materials databases and scientific searches
  • is capable of defining problems and developing solution proposals with a high degree of user involvement
  • is capable of acquiring knowledge and experience by identifying and extracting the essence of research/analysis material
  • masters construction, model building and surface treatment
  • is capable of building on knowledge and understanding of materials and material properties, as well as production and industrial processes

Competence

The student

  • understands and has practical experience of dealing with the interaction between the user, environment and product in a design process
  • is capable of exchanging opinions and experience with different resource persons and professional environments to promote professional development
  • is capable of reflecting on his/her own development in the learning process and adjusting it under supervision
  • can describe and discuss ethical challenges at the intersection of design, technology and society, including issues of integration, participation and multiculturalism

Content

The exam is a practical-aesthetic exam project with pertaining written paper. The project and the paper are assessed as one. The exam assignment will be distributed around six weeks before the submission deadline. The result of the exam can be appealed. Individual exam.

1. Practical-aesthetic project

The student shall produce/develop a practical-aesthetic work on an issue relating to the course.

2. Written paper

The written paper shall be on the practical-aesthetic work, and shall be maximum 8,000 words long.

Absence - fail Students who do not take the exam due to valid absence, or who are awarded a ‘fail’ can register for a resit/rescheduled exam.

If a student is taking a resit/rescheduled exam, he/she can submit a reworked version of the same exam project, or a new exam paper.

Teaching and learning methods

Project work individually or in groups.

Course requirements

The following coursework is compulsory and must be approved before the student can take the exam:

  • Submission of presentation material and participation in three (3) milestone meetings.
  • Reflection notes.

Assessment

Emnet består av om lag 9-10 ukers praksisopphold i bedrift eller ved en annen utdanningsinstitusjon. Studenten tar del i den daglige driften og får kjennskap til bedriftens oppbygging, struktur, kultur og verdisyn.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

The course is organised as practical work and theoretical studies that are carried out simultaneously. Project work is an important part of the programme. Teaching is progress-based, from common basic assignments to independent topics chosen by the students themselves.

Interaction between theoretical understanding and practical-aesthetic creative work and reflection is emphasised in the course. Supervision and assessment are an important part of the work process.

Teaching in the course is project and cooperation-based, to reflect work in enterprises, workshops, museums, galleries and collections. The work and teaching methods are lectures, seminars, supervision, debates, field studies and exhibitions. The purpose of this is to develop the students’ knowledge, ideas, practical skills, professional understanding and ability to express themselves.

Students on the course are required to attend workshops and to actively participate in tuition. Students are expected to find relevant reading material in addition to the syllabus, and are encouraged to use the learning centres and the resources available there.

Studenten:

  • kan delta konstruktivt i arbeidet i bedriften/annen utdanningsinstitusjon
  • kan drøfte og reflektere over ulike kulturelle og etiske perspektiv, arbeidsmetoder, samhandling og rolleforståelse innad i en bedrift/annen utdanningsinstitusjon

Generell kompetanse

Studenten:

  • har forståelse for å arbeide med fagområdet i kommersielle sammenhenger/ fordypning i fagområdet fra annen utdanningsinstitusjon
  • kan planlegge og gjennomføre varierte arbeidsoppgaver og prosjekter som strekker seg over tid, alene og som deltaker i en gruppe, og i tråd med etiske krav og retningslinjer

Examiners

Emnet forutsetter tilstedeværelse og aktiv deltakelse ved praksisstedet eller i annen utdanningsinstitusjon.
