Course history
  • Introduction

    In this course, the students are expected to acquire advanced knowledge required to practise nurse anaesthesia in relation to patients who undergo surgery or examinations that require anaesthesia and acutely and/or critically ill patients. The students should acquire in-depth knowledge of patients' psychosocial and existential needs and methods for reducing stress and suffering.

    Moreover, they are expected to acquire in-depth knowledge of relevant research and quality-related work (professional development, quality assurance or quality control work) in the field of nurse anaesthesia, and thereby understand the importance of research and quality-related work in clinical nurse anaesthesia. This course is intended to enable the students to document, develop the quality of and quality-assure nurse anaesthesia.

    The students are expected to develop an awareness of how organisational, financial and legal factors influence nursing and the specialist health service and be able to see this in relation to their responsibility to practise nurse anaesthesia, be a leader in their field and work in a team. This course also covers knowledge of the working environment in a specialist unit and how stress factors in a working environment can be prevented and reduced.

    After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

    Knowledge

    The student

    • has advanced knowledge of the functions and responsibilities of the nurse anaesthetist in the health service and society
    • has in-depth knowledge of quality work, including methods for quality improvement and quality control
    • has advanced knowledge of how anaesthesia can feel and its effect on the patient
    • has advanced knowledge of self-care deficits in relation to a patient's fundamental needs
    • has knowledge of nursing ethics and different ethical guidelines
    • has advanced knowledge of professional and ethical challenges in the field of nurse anaesthesia

    Skills

    The student

    • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to existing theories on how patients experience anaesthesia, surgical procedures and examinations
    • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to theories on communicating with patients and their next of kin
    • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to theories on anaesthesia and analgesia
    • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to theories on wholly or partly compensatory care in the event of serious self-care deficits in relation to a patient's fundamental needs

    Competence

    The student

    • is capable of analysing relevant academic, professional and research ethics issues in nurse anaesthesia based on discipline knowledge, research, experience and patient knowledge
    • is capable, with some supervision, of communicating about issues, analyses and conclusions in nurse anaesthesia, both with specialists and with the general public
    • is capable of contributing to new ideas and innovation processes in clinical practice

    After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and competence:

    Knowledge

    The student

    • has in-depth knowledge of how the most common anaesthesia methods and drugs function and are used
    • has in-depth knowledge of the most common complications in connection with acute and/or critical illness, advanced medical treatment and anaesthesia
    • has in-depth knowledge of special circumstances relating to different surgical procedures that have a bearing on the choice and application of different anaesthesia forms, techniques and drugs
    • has in-depth knowledge of maintaining and restoring vital functions in situations where they are threatened
    • has knowledge of the effects of different treatment and examination methods on the nurse anaesthetist's working environment

    Skills

    The student

    • is capable of analysing and taking a critical approach to existing theories and methods in nurse anaesthesia
    • is capable of working on practical and theoretical problem-solving relating to the functions and responsibilities of a nurse anaesthetist:
      • is capable, with some assistance, of working in an independent and responsible manner when administering general anaesthesia to otherwise able-bodied patients (ASA 1 and 2) in accordance with applicable guidelines
      • is capable of independently administering and evaluating prescribed anaesthetics and other relevant drugs
      • is capable of independently administering and evaluating the most commonly used pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain relief methods
      • is capable of independently monitoring patients under regional anaesthesia and deep sedation
      • is capable of using the anaesthetic machine and advanced medical equipment commonly used in treatment in a conscious and sound manner
      • is capable of independently identifying acute and problematic situations
      • is capable of ensuring continuity in patient treatment through written and oral documentation

    Competence

    The student

    • is capable, with some supervision, of analysing ethical issues based on relevant discipline knowledge, research, experience and patient knowledge
    • is capable of participating actively in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation on patient treatment in accordance with his/her own competence and applicable ethical principles and healthcare legislation
    • is capable of contributing to new ideas and innovation processes in nurse anaesthesia
  • Course requirements

    The following coursework requirements must be met before a student can receive an assessment for the course:

    Assignment 1 - Regional anaesthesia. The conscious patient

    • The students prepare their own research questions.
    • Individual assignment.
    • Scope: 3,000 words (+/- 20%).
    • The syllabus selected by the students must be used in the assignment.
    • The assignment must be written in accordance with the section Assessment of written work in the Assessment chapter of the programme description.
    • The students receive written feedback from the lecturer.

    Assignment 2 - General anaesthesia

    • The students prepare their own research questions.
    • Individual assignment.
    • Scope: 3,000 words (+/- 20%).
    • The syllabus selected by the students must be used in the assignment.
    • The assignment must be written in accordance with the section Assessment of written work in chapter 10 Assessment in the programme description.
    • The students receive written and oral feedback from their fellow students and oral feedback from the lecturer.

  • Grading scale

    Grade scale A-F. For group exams, all the students in the group are awarded the same grade. Students who are awarded a fail grade (F) are given one opportunity to submit a reworked version of the assignment.

  • Overlapping courses

    The summative assessment is carried out by a representative of the practical training establishment and a representative of the university. The final decision on whether to award a pass or fail grade is made by the university.
