Course history

Introduction

The course provides a systematic introduction to traditional and modern leadership theory and practice. The students will gain insight into current issues in leadership and will develop an independent and critical attitude towards the subject area.

Language of instruction: English.

Recommended preliminary courses

Prior knowledge of organizational theory and organizational psychology is recommended.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should have the following overall learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • overview of and insight into traditional and newer leadership theories, including current issues within leadership 
  • knowledge of leader traits and leader selection, leadership behavior and leadership development, leadership levels and leadership roles
  • knowledge about change management, about the connection between leadership and organizational results, about power and leadership

Skills

The student can

  • do independent analyses using their knowledge of management theory

General competence

The student can

  • relate critically to the subject area using their knowledge of leadership theory

Teaching and learning methods

Varied teaching methods are used with a combination of lectures, discussions, student presentations and group work.

Course requirements

No coursework requirements or compulsory activities

Assessment

The exam in the course is a semester paper written in groups of 3 or 4 students. The paper must have a scope of 6 to 8 pages (excluding references).

Font and font size: Arial / Calibri / Verdana 12 points. Line spacing: 1.5.

Permitted exam materials and equipment

All aids are permitted, as long as the student complies with the rules for source referencing.

Grading scale

Grade scale A-F

Examiners

The exam papers are assessed by one internal and one external examiner.

At least 25% of the exam papers will be assessed by two examiners. The grades awarded for the papers assessed by two examiners form the basis for determining the level for all the exam papers.
