Supervised professional training during the programme Teacher Education in Practical and Aesthetic Subjects Years 1-13, Design, Arts and Crafts

Regulations on the framework plan for teacher education in practical and aesthetic subjects for Years 1-13 apply to the implementation of supervised professional training. Below is information about supervised professional training for the teacher education master’s programme (MLEST). Read more about the master’s programme in the relevant programme plan.

In the 5-year programme of study Teacher Education in Practical and Aesthetic Subjects for Years 1-13, Design, Arts and Crafts, students will experience working life relevance and complete at least 130 days of compulsory supervised professional training. This is divided into nine courses throughout the five years of study, and consists of observational training, teaching training and dissemination training in primary, lower secondary and upper secondary school, and various educational dissemination arenas in the arts and cultural sector.

Supervised professional training is an integral part of the programme’s courses and helps students develop the ability to reflect on and develop knowledge and skills within their own professional practice. Students should experience progression in their supervised professional training, from observation and analysis at the start of the programme to further developing experiential and research-based teaching practices in the final part of the programme.

Supervised professional training is conducted both as group training involving two to four students throughout the course of study and as individual training during the last year of study. Collaboration with fellow students and the training staff plays a key role in the programme of study and helps develop individual teaching skills. There should be a close link between content and work methods in professional subjects, the practical and aesthetic subjects and supervised professional training.

Student attendance during the period of supervised professional training is 100 percent compulsory and follows the daily routines of the school and the practical training supervisor at the training placement. Supervised professional training is carried out as required coursework and does not carry credits. The scope of supervised professional training is in addition to the other teaching in the course.

The department mainly collaborates with educational arenas in Oslo and Akershus county authorities when conducting supervised professional training associated with the programme of study. The department assigns students a supervised professional training placement. Students do not find their own placements.

Training is supervised and assessed by practical training supervisors and academic supervisors from the department via a supervision and assessment report, and the programme of study is subject to regulations relating to suitability assessment.

  • Organisation of supervised professional training over five years

During the first year of study, students have 30 days of supervised professional training in Years 1-10 of primary and lower secondary school. Students choose Years 1-7 or 8-10 at the start of their studies and attend the same training school throughout the year. Supervised professional training is integrated into the courses:

    • MLEST1210
    • MLEST1400

The second year of study involves 15 days of supervised professional training in upper secondary school and 15 days of supervised professional training in other educational arenas associated with cultural school, folk high school, makerspace workshops, museums and other dissemination in the arts and cultural sector. Students submit their preferences for their own supervised professional training placement at the start of the courses. Supervised professional training is integrated into the courses:

    • MLEST2200
    • MLEST2300

During the third year of study, 30 days of supervised professional training is conducted in primary and lower secondary school or upper secondary school via elective courses in subject II and/or subject III. Students must apply for programmes of study with school subjects that involve supervised professional training. All courses have integrated supervised professional training.

The fourth year of study includes 15 days of supervised professional training in Years 1-10 of primary and lower secondary school and 15 days of project-based training in primary and lower secondary school or upper secondary school. Students submit their preferences for their own supervised professional training placement at the start of the courses. Supervised professional training is integrated into the courses:

    • MLEST4100
    • MLEST4400

During the fifth year of study, students have 10 days of supervised professional training in Years 1-10 of primary and lower secondary school, upper secondary school or at other educational arenas. Supervised professional training can be linked to the master’s project and carried out individually. Students submit their preferences for their own supervised professional training placement at the start of the course and are guided towards relevant training arenas. Supervised professional training is integrated into the course:

    • MLEST5100
  • Supervised professional training providers and placement

The Department of Art, Design and Drama is responsible for organising supervised professional training placements, and has agreements with schools, educational learning arenas and arts and cultural institutions in Oslo and Akershus. Students do not organise their own supervised professional training placements and must not contact training arenas themselves.

Travel time of up to 1.5 hours to the supervised professional training placements from Campus Pilestredet should be expected, and travel reimbursement for public transport can be provided outside of zone 1.

  • Supervised professional training attendance

Students must be present at their supervised professional training placement for full working weeks of 37.5 hours each, and within the working hours of 08:00-16:00. Variations may occur at different supervised professional training placements, as attendance and the content of the training are defined by the supervised professional training provider and the practical training supervisor’s work schedule.

Students are to have 30 hours of compulsory and scheduled time per week during the period of supervised professional training. This includes 20 hours for teaching, meetings and pupil contact, and 10 hours for supervision and assessment. This time is managed by the practical training supervisor and includes all teaching, group supervision, individual assessment, meetings in various team configurations, inspection/monitoring, school-home collaboration, and any meetings with management.

The remaining time of 7.5 hours is regulated by the students themselves and should be used for planning lessons, preparation and relevant required coursework and work assignments associated with supervised professional training.

NB: In supervised professional training placements at upper secondary schools, cultural schools, and other educational arenas, the amount of teaching may be somewhat reduced, and the scope of other tasks may increase, within the framework of the 30 hours of compulsory time.

  • Learning outcomes via supervision and assessment

Assessment provisions are stipulated in the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges and Regulations relating to studies and examinations at OsloMet and Regulations on the framework plan for teacher education in practical and aesthetic subjects for Years 1-13.

Descriptors can be found in the individual course plans for supervised professional training in the programme of study. Practical training supervisors at the training placements are responsible for assessing students throughout the period of supervised professional training. Supervised professional training is assessed using the grading scale pass/fail, in consultation with the assigned academic supervisor from the department.

Students receive regular supervision through verbal guidance in groups and a written assessment at the end of each period of supervised professional training. Supervision and assessment are documented at the end of a period of supervised professional training by the practical training supervisor writing a final assessment in a supervision and assessment report for each student, based on the content and learning outcomes of each supervised professional training course. The department and student receive a copy of the Supervision and Assessment Report after the period of supervised professional training has been completed.

If required, students are responsible for submitting the assessment report to the practical training supervisor during the next period of supervised professional training.

Pass/fail and doubts regarding supervised professional training

In order to pass supervised professional training, all required coursework and compulsory attendance during the period of training must be completed and both periods of teaching training must receive a ‘Pass’ grade.

If there is any doubt as to whether a student will pass their period of supervised professional training, the student in question must be notified verbally and in writing halfway through the period in order to improve. The practical training supervisor at the supervised professional training placement conducts an individual midway assessment interview with the student and formulates a notification of doubt if this is required. In some cases, it may be necessary for students to be notified after this deadline.

If students do not pass a period of supervised professional training, the same period of training can only be attempted once more. The student can only register for supervised professional training the next time the same period of training is arranged in the course.
