Supervised professional training in the Master of Aesthetic Practices in Society (part-time) – specialisation in Art Therapy

In Art Therapy, supervised professional training and collaboration with working life are conducted via external training placement providers and internal simulation training.

The aim of supervised professional training in this specialisation is for students to acquire knowledge and experience of how art therapy is used in various contexts within the fields of mental health work, somatics, social work, and in educational and cultural contexts. The supervised professional training helps to promote students’ ability to reflect on and develop their own professional practice.

Through supervised professional training, students will achieve satisfactory learning outcomes in accordance with the programme plan.

  • Organisation of supervised professional training

The art therapy specialisation includes 160 hours of supervised professional training, of which 20 hours are simulation training carried out at OsloMet. Students will be in contact with working life from the first year of study. Supervised professional training is spread over one and a half academic years of study and is integrated into three courses during the second, third, and fourth semesters.

In art therapy, the period of supervised professional training can be carried out individually and/or in groups, both in a physical context and parts can be carried out digitally where appropriate and upon agreement with the department.

  • Supervised professional training providers and placement

Supervised professional training may be conducted in a clinical, social science, educational or cultural context; in special needs schools, municipal health services, hospitals, patient organisations, rehabilitation clinics, housing units and institutions.

In collaboration with the faculty, students are responsible for finding a supervised professional training placement. Students working at a professionally relevant workplace may complete their period of supervised professional training at their own workplace. The supervised professional training placement provider must be approved by the Department of Art, Design and Drama at OsloMet.

For more information, see the programme and course plans for the Art Therapy specialisation and the Canvas platform.

  • Supervised professional training attendance

Participation in supervised professional training is compulsory and requires 90% attendance. Any absence exceeding two working days must be compensated for according to agreement with the supervised professional training placement provider in order to obtain approved training.

The student and the supervised professional training placement provider must agree on the distribution of working hours and attendance throughout the period of training. Agreed attendance must be approved by the Department of Art, Design and Drama at OsloMet.

  • Learning outcomes via supervision and assessment

Training will be supervised and assessed by an academically qualified supervisor at the university as part of the course of study. Self-assessment is also part of the course.

The Art Therapy specialisation integrates knowledge about the use of creative expression with psychological theories, therapeutic methods and research. Students will learn how to develop interventions and methods in order to conduct work focusing on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and recovery, based on the needs of different clients. The specialisation also explores how different methods can be used as part of art therapy interventions in the evaluation of user experiences and in research. Students are expected to become creative and innovative actors who can influence the current way in which prevention and rehabilitation of health-related challenges are practiced.

Supervised professional training is required coursework in the courses and must be completed in order to take the course examination.

Supervised professional training is assessed using the grading scale pass/fail.
